What’s Next in the Paranormal Craze?

Since the whole Twilight phenomenon has had paranormal books flying off the shelves everyone is trying to get in on the game and figure out what’s going to be next big thing in the supernatural line up.

Werewolves and other were-creatures came in second after vampires, which they always have. Many love the furry but they have never won the top spot. Poor Wolfman has always played second best to Dracula much like poor Jacob plays second to Edward in Twilight (personally I am on team Jacob- he’s so hawt!).

Then zombies were slated to be the next vampire with a rash of movies and books dedicated to the brainless monsters . Come on, really? A rotting corpse as the next hero hottie? Not in my book. Honestly I can’t see zombies being as popular as vampires…ever.

A whole lot of other supes (supernatural types) are being tossed into books from witches to demons to fairies, even mermaids, but most of all ...Angels.

It’s all over the place, angels are the new vampires. Hmmm…I admit angels have their appeal but I really can’t see them having the same charisma or seduction factor. Plus they are so wrapped up in religious connotations that may make some people squirm. Seriously who wants Angels of God as super sexy characters in a paranormal erotica book?

I think J.R. Ward might have started the angel thing tossing that sparkling angel guy into her Black Dagger Brotherhood series then starting a whole new series solely about angels. Now two new books are hitting the shelves including and Falling, fly by Skyler White and Angelology by Danielle Trussoni and there’s a handful more angel books out there ready to read...

But are they the new vampires? Will they take over the top spot? Not likely. Of course I am a diehard vampire fan from way back. While I love paranormal characters of many flavors vampires will always have my heart and be in my top spot.

What about you? Which supernatural creature is your all time favorite?

The Weakness of Human Magic Guest Blog and Giveaway with Natasha Larry

A Character Guest Blog by Lucy of the Dey-Vah Guard

When Jaycie Lerner was named my charge, I spent a lot of time protecting her in the shadows of Jonesborough, TN. She was six when her powers manifested, and I’m proud to say the youngest power manifestation in Dey-Vah History. You see, my race were chosen from the most promising in the Angelic Sect to guard a new breed of humans, I was chosen for the Inner Circle- as one of the most promising in this new fairy race, to guard the superhumans’ Core.

The first thing I noticed about Jonesborough is that there is a lot of magical energy there. I know this is why Mason Lerner, the father of my charge, chose to raise Jaycie in Jonesborough. It is true that the South is more magical than most other regions in the United States, but this is doubly so for Jonesborough. Most of the town’s residents openly accepted the way it felt to be around Jaycie and her family because they seem more open to things they can neither see nor explain.

Not that any of the witches or whatnot in Jonesborough can hold a candle to the magic that courses through Dey-Vah blood, but it was interesting to be around humans that were not so blind to the nature of the real world. I mean, in truth, if humans knew everything that was really out there, they would probably die simply trying to wrap their feeble minds around it, but as I said, it was nice.

You see, humans (and I don’t mean superhumans) make magic work because the human will truly is powerful. The thing that makes Dey-Vah blood magic so much more powerful than anything any human mind could work up is that we do not suffer the same weaknesses as the human race. Humans split magic into black and white, when it is all the same thing. I think it’s their sense of morality- which I will never understand. Even the most evolved of them- my Jaycie- suffers from this same weakness.

Another reason human magic suffers is that so many spells are cast to bring love, when love is already exists in nature, humans just have such a queer definition of love. For your race its romantic love. Only one person in the human species defined romantic love correctly: it is a grave mental illness.

Still, the biggest problem, a problem the Core is destined to fix in your race, is doubt. The Dey-Vah never question their magic. We know it is all things that Mother Nature and we know that it will work. This is why the human species is facing extinction… none of you knows how powerful you have the potential to be.

This is why the Core will become so instrumental in your survival. Not only are their powers representative of things the human race cannot survive without, they will be the ones to open your eyes.

Here is an excerpt from Unnatural Law featuring Lucy and Jaycie Lerner.

Suddenly, Jaycie wasn’t alone in the kitchen. She gasped wildly and jumped in shock as her glass of apple juice fell and shattered on the floor. “Christ on a cracker!” she yelped, grabbing a napkin. “Use a doorbell, would ya?”

Lucy of the Dey-Vah Guard, the six-foot-tall fairy that served as Jaycie’s magical bodyguard, stood nearby, regarding her with stoic interest.

“What? Are you okay over there?” Matt asked.

“No,” she told him honestly, cupping the phone to her ear with her shoulder and bending over to mop up the mess at the same time.

“End the call please,” Lucy instructed in her musical voice. Jaycie had almost forgotten how rude fairies could be. She narrowed her eyes and sighed into the phone. “Matt, I have to go.”

“Why? What’s happening?”

“Trust me, if I told you, you wouldn’t believe me. This one you’ll have to see for yourself.”

“Sure, call me later then,” Matt said.

Jaycie put her phone aside and looked up to find Lucy staring at her anxiously. She cupped Jaycie’s hands in her own and sighed with relief. “Um, what’s going on?” Jaycie asked nervously.

“You seem well,” Lucy told her.

“What?”

“I have spoken to John Gramm and your father. The Dey-Vah have been put on alert. They will explain this to you. We will all be around a lot more until this is sorted out.” Lucy leaned forward and kissed Jaycie’s forehead, and then was gone.

Jaycie’s phone rang, and she had to shake herself out of her rigid posture. “Hey, Ally.”

“Lucy just leave?” she asked, sounding annoyed and tired.

“Yeah ... what’s going on?”

“I’m coming to get you for this little meeting,” Allison said and sighed. “Don’t worry, it’s no big deal.”

“Okay.”

“Hop on.”

“Christ!” Jaycie screamed when Allison suddenly appeared beside her.

Allison grinned. “Sorry. Come on, I need to take you to Alabama, then I have to get somewhere else.”

“Can’t this one be handled over the phone?” Jaycie complained. Allison snorted and swung Jaycie onto her back. “I know ... just following orders.”

Fantasy / Young-Adult
Book 2 Darwin’s Children Series

Seventeen-year-old Jaycie Lerner’s psycho-kinetic power surge is over, and her astounding powers are under control for the time being – sort of. As she struggles to maintain her humanity in the face of the awesome terror and responsibility of her abilities, she also yearns for the chance at a normal life – and a relationship with Matt Carter, the best friend she had to leave behind. But Matt’s got a few tricks up his sleeve, and he’s not about to give up on his feelings for Jaycie.

As Jaycie and her family grapple with the day-to-day routine of trying to keep their world together, Jaycie’s mother figure, Allison Young, endures a personal crisis of her own. The superhuman blonde possesses the physical equivalent of Jaycie’s awesome psychic power.

So evolved, at ninety-two she still looks twenty. But what good is extended life when everyone else around her is so fragile? With no one to share her unusual life, she’s a uniquely lonely woman yearning for the romantic love she sees all around her. But in a dream she gets her wish – and it quickly turns to a nightmare for everyone else in her life. The memory of a rose is all she can hold onto in the storm of obsession that nearly sweeps her away.

Things quickly turn deadly for the vampires, but the Dey-Vah Guard fairies refuse to acknowledge there’s an imbalance in the nature they protect. As the danger gets ever closer to Jaycie and her family, the race is on to find answers before a secret plot can destroy them

Fear and Sex- Forever Intertwined Plus a Giveaway

Fear and sex are an inexplicably intertwined couple.

For most of us at some point in our lives sex has been connected with fear and fear has been connected to sex- fear of having sex, fear of getting caught having sex, fear of getting pregnant or catching something because of sex, fear of sex for the first time or fear of the first time with someone new…

Fear can be erotic, it can be an aphrodisiac. Fear can make you feel really alive. Your heart races, your blood rushes through your veins, your temperature rises and your senses are on high alert- and all of this can make sex so much more exquisite. That little extra thrill can be a jolt that takes the ride to new heights.

Consider the dating ritual of the male taking the female to a horror movie or a haunted attraction- she’s frightened, he can put his arms around her, comfort her, then later when alone that closeness can become something much more erotic. Fear becomes an aphrodisiac; the horror creates a need for life affirming, pleasurable actions to drown out the fear and the horror.
What’s more life affirming and pleasurable than sex?

Plus the darkness can be so attractive- I think that’s why Halloween becomes more popular every year. What better way to drown out the true horrors of life than by scaring ourselves silly? Especially when afterward you can curl up in a lover’s arms and feel more alive than ever.

Another role fear plays in our sex lives, is that we are often attracted to the things we fear.

Some men are attracted to powerful women, sexually aggressive women- women that they fear, women that will dominate them.

In some cultures men are so fearful of women they do anything and everything to thwart their control and power- from surgically altering their bodies so they can not feel pleasure or be attractive or just hiding them under layers upon layers of clothing. Thankfully many women in the US don’t have to worry about such things, but the fact these practices still exist in our modern world is fearsome.

But I digress. I would rather concentrate on the more pleasurable aspects of fear.

Consider women who adore the bad boys.

Bad boys are forbidden and sometimes scary. We know they are wrong for us. Bad boys can be dominating, dangerous, big and completely fearsome- and that makes us want them even more. Some of us see bad boys as a project we can fix while others just want to ride that dangerous rollercoaster of fear and arousal.

Nothing shows how strong our attraction to bad boys is more than the popularity of paranormal romance and paranormal erotica books.

Supernatural bad boys are the ultimate combination of fear and sexual attraction.

Consider the vampire who could snap us in two or drain us of blood before we could do anything about it, yet we crave him like no other.

How about the ferocious werewolf who could rip us to shreds? But oh yes we are attracted to his animal magnetism.

How about the seductive demon who displays danger more than any other creature yet his sexuality is so forceful, so enthralling we just cannot deny him?

Fear and desire, such a delicious combination – especially for the paranormal predator and those of us drawn to them.

I love reading paranormal romances and paranormal erotica. It is both and escape and a desire driven thrill ride, a safe one at that, because in the real world would we really want to date vampire? Hmmm…that’s a discussion for another time. 

I also love to write paranormal erotic romances, the little tingles of fear thrown into the attraction are delicious little tidbits that make being a writer such an awesome job.

In my short story collection, Paranormal Pleasures Ten Tales of Supernatural Seduction, fear is an underlying theme in many of the stories.

Whether it’s fear of getting involved in a serious relationship, fear of getting caught in a compromising situation, fear of trying something or someone new, or the sweet thrill of flirting with danger- the fear is there, enticingly intertwined with the seduction.

I’m offering one lucky reader a chance to delve into my world today. I’m giving away one ecopy of Paranormal Pleasures.

To enter just leave a comment on this post telling me what you think about the combination of fear and sex.
