6 Favorite Things About New Orleans By Louisa Bacio

6 Favorite Things About New Orleans

By Louisa Bacio

Long before I’d visited New Orleans, something called out to me. Rich with historical depth, the city lures in visitors, who sometimes never want to leave. Easily, I could see myself living there, or at least taking an extended stay.

In a few weeks, I’ll be headed to New Orleans once again, for the Authors After Dark conference, and I’ve been thinking about a few of my favorite activities.

1) Cemetery/Ghost Tours – Not only do you learn a lot about the city while walking through it, I also met many others with similar interests. As an author, it’s also a wealth-bed of inspiration.

2) The Food – Books upon books have been written on the foodie treats of the Big Easy. My husband visited often when he was in the military, and before we went I asked if we needed reservations. He laughed. The food is good just about anywhere, and he was right. Walk in off the street, and your tastebuds will agree.

3) Emeril’s – Forget what hubby said. If you want to get into some of the “hot” places, you NEED reservations. I highly suggest Emeril’s, even if it’s for lunch or appetizers.

4) Pirate’s Alley Café & Absinthe House – Featured in my m/m erotic paranormal The Vampire & The Werewolf: A New Orleans Christmas, this cozy eclectic bar is located in the heart of the French Quarter, and attracts a combination of locals and tourists. I recommended this destination to my aunt earlier this year, and it ended up being their favorite regular stop. They went beyond me, and started their mornings off with Bloody Marys.  http://www.piratesalleycafe.com/

5) The Fleur de Lis – Once you start looking, you’ll see this icon just about everywhere. Two of my favorite colors are purple and black, and it’s even more amazing the abundance of available products. I’ve purchased everything from an ice cream scoop to a henna tattoo. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also the logo of the New Orleans Saints football team.

6) Kitchen Witch Cookbooks – This niche store on Toulouse Street seems cluttered at first glance, but keep looking and you’ll find some mighty treasures. Everyone I’ve ever talked to within Kitchen Witch has been warm and welcoming. Ask a question, and you’ll get a story. I highly recommend that you bring home a bottle of their mixed spice blend. You’ll be adding it to everything from chili to Mexican food. Seriously, I tuck multiple jars into my luggage, and have even ordered more for holiday gifts. http://www.kwcookbooks.com/
