Interview with Donna Galanti

What inspired you to become an author?

I started reading at an early age and wanted to disappear into the books I read. The Narnia Chronicles (tried many closets after this to go through) and anything by Roald Dahl (the Tooth Fairy would deliver his books). My first fiction piece was a murder mystery I wrote when I was seven that I had the neighborhood kids act out.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I write like a Gemini would: dark and light. My paranormal suspense novel, A Human Element, is dark fiction with a dash of hope. My stories are more about the characters than the plot and they all have similar elements full of love, loss, redemption.

Do you write in different genres?

I do. My novel, A Human Element, is adult suspense. I also have a middle grade adventure I’m pitching right now and a coming-of-age young adult novel I’m plotting out.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

I really can’t say. I like writing adult because I can write as dark as I like with no boundaries. I like writing middle grade as it’s fun and full of discovery.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

A Hidden Element, the sequel to A Human Element, refers to the dark hidden elements inside all of us we can choose to embrace or turn away from.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

That our genes do not dictate who we are. We can overcome them. It’s never too late to find peace. And sometimes the monsters to fear are the ones inside us, not the obvious ones.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

Adoption and being an only child runs through my book A Human Element. I am both and they had a deep impact on my life. My childhood home and town is also featured in it as well as New Paltz, where I lived once, and Hawaii, where I also lived as a U.S. Navy Photographer. My character, Ben Fieldstone, is stationed there with the same career and finds himself in a life-or-death situation on a Hawaiian mountain top (that part is fiction!).

What books are in your to read pile?

Too many I can’t get to! Bel Canto, Mystic River, and many by author friends.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Here is a one line summary of A Hidden Element coming in 2013, the sequel to A Human Element: When a family’s son is taken by the same unearthly evil that brutalized them fifteen years ago they must sacrifice all again to defeat a new terrifying enemy–an enemy that wants to rule the world with their son as his heir.

Do you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this book?

Music was a huge inspiration for me writing A Human Element. However, I can’t listen to music while I write. I find songs for characters and scenes and listen to them prior to writing and then sit down and write. The Gladiator movie soundtrack fueled the writing of my villain. Here’s a post I wrote with the book’s playlist. http://jlwylie.wordpress.com/2012/03/26/music-inspires-us-to-write-by-donna-galanti/

Determined to find the killer, she follows her visions to the site of a crashed meteorite–her hometown. There, she meets Ben Fieldstone, who seeks answers about his parents’ death the night the meteorite struck. In a race to stop a mad man, they unravel a frightening secret that binds them together.
