Interview and Giveaway with Samaire Provost Author of Mad World

What inspired you to become an author?

For as long as I can remember I have loved to read. I just loved books. I loved marinating in them. It was a short jump from reading books to want to write books. I started at a very young age; I think I was 7 years old. I wrote a short story. It was ridiculous and I was fiercely proud of it. I continued to write stories, and when I was 12 I wrote my first fan fic story. Back then it wasn’t called fan fic, but that’s what it was.  It was a short story set in the “Star Trek” universe. I was a big-time trekker/trekkie …
lol!!  It was about Kirk and Spock, and Spock’s dreams affecting Kirk’s waking hours.

It was full of angst and emotion and tragedy. I sent it off to the editors of a fan magazine. Never heard back from them. I remember the story was written on notebook paper, in pencil, single spaced. Probably a nightmare to read. But I loved it and remember it to this day. I was a voracious reader, and was excited to write something that took place in the worlds I read about, so I guess you could say books inspired me to become a writer.

Books and Neil Gaiman. He’s one of my favorite writers. I went through a Gaiman phase where I had to read everything he wrote. Then I read about him and his life as a writer and I thought, “That is my dream, I want to do that for a living.”

I was working at a job I hated at the time, and it was at this time I decided to really give it a go. Instead of writing stories as a hobby, I decided to try and write for a living.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I’m not sure. I know that I write very fast-paced stories. Somewhat abrupt sentences. I like to write about odd things happening to real, everyday people. How would they react?

Do you write in different genres?

I mostly write YA paranormal/dystopian right now. But I’ve written in a lot of genres, including adult fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and children’s.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

Right now it’s YA paranormal and fantasy.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

I was writing the beginning chapters and also looking for a song to listen to while I wrote it. The song had to capture the feeling of these teens I was writing about. My husband shared a cover song he loved. It was “Mad World” covered by Adam Lambert. I listened to it and I thought, “that’s it!” So I put it on a loop, lowered the sound way down and continued writing. The more the song played into my mood, the better the story got. After a few weeks I told my husband, “This book is going to be called “Mad World” because in it, the world’s going mad. Then I decided it was going to be a series of books. This first one was the beginning of the Plague in modern times. So I named the series “Mad World” and this first book was “Mad World: EPIDEMIC”

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

I begin writing it, and then the title comes to me. The book speaks to me, the characters tell me what it’s all about. They tell me. I just listen and write it down.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

It’s mostly an adventure to be enjoyed, with characters you care about. But if there’s one cool theme running through it, it’s courage in the face of adversity. Thinking quick on your feet in order to survive.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

I was writing the first chapters of the book and feeling it out, when I read an article on the Internet about how scientists had indeed unearthed graves from the mid-fourteenth century, mass graves from the Black Plague. They were extracting the DNA from the bone marrow and trying to activate the Yersinia Pestis bacterial endotoxins, to study them. They were actually doing this. I read that article and then did some more research on their work and I thought, “That is a really stupid thing to do.” And then I thought, what could happen? So the science behind it is based on real studies by these scientists.

What books/authors have influenced your life?

I’ve been heavily influenced by many writers. Susan Cooper, Madeleine L’Engle, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, and especially Neil Gaiman.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Gaiman. Definitely.

What book are you reading now?

I am re-reading The Dark Is Rising series. I’m also reading The Enchantress by Michael Scott, and Wake by Amanda Hocking
What books are in your to read pile?
Oh, goodness.  There are over fifty. I love books. Most of them are from the YA section of Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I am finishing up the sequel to Mad World: EPIDEMIC. It’s called Mad World: SANCTUARY

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Well, I don’t want to give anything away… but it’s the continuing story of Alyssa and Jake, and the rest of the friends. They encounter even more horrific and terrifying situations, and have to think on their feet, make hard decisions, and survive. Above all, they must survive. I’m told by beta readers it’s even better than the first and definitely “unputdownable”

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Fighting everyday life and my own tendency to procrastinate. But once I get down to writing, and I do it for the better part of every day, it just flows. The story just pours out of me, for the most part. Every now and then I get to a point where I have to think something through. Then I get up and pace and think it through. How does this happen?  It has to be logical; the first rule of good writing is to tell the truth, in whatever universe you’ve created. Once in a while I have to sleep on something to figure it all out. Those nights usually end up with me dreaming about the story, working it all out in my head. I fall asleep with the story and I wake up with it. It infuses my entire being.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I have several authors that are my favorites. Susan Cooper and Madeleine L’Engle wrote stories I adore, and re-read every few years. Their stories were out of the ordinary. Odd, in a way. I love odd stories. I loved the Twilight Zone, and Ray Bradbury. More recently, Neil Gaiman. He writes very odd stories. Reading all of these odd stories helped my creativity. I like to write odd stories, just like they did.
I also just finished Fear by Michael Grant. Love that series! He can write scenes that are tough, and he writes them very well. I write tough scenes in my books. Reading Michael Grant’s Gone series, of which Fear is the latest, really helped me to write tough scenes well.

Do you have to travel much to do research for your books?

I do all my research on the Internet. But I also lived in some of the places my stories take place in. My husband grew up in Fresno and actually attended Bullard High. The neighborhoods where the story is set are real; they are in that school district and are intended to reflect that way that part of the city is in real life. I think this lends a touch of realism to the novel.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

My husband and editor, Stephen Provost

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Read.  Read until it’s dripping out your ears. Then write. Pay no attention to your fears of any shortcomings. Write. Write some more. Finish.

Do you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this book?

Just one song. “Mad World” sung by Adam Lambert.

Release Day Blitz and $25 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway Serafina and the Silent Vampire by Marie Treanor

Adult Excerpt from:
SERAFINA AND THE SILENT VAMPIRE (Serafina’s, Book 1)
By MARIE TREANOR
Ebook available 28th August from Amazon and B&N

Although the scary glow didn’t vanish from his eyes, they seemed to soften. His body didn’t. It still pinned her helplessly to the wall. He lifted his hand and touched her cheek, trailing his fingertips down her jaw to her throat. She gasped.
“Serafina,” he murmured in her head. “Some things are just stronger than you. They don’t necessarily hurt you, and they won’t necessarily defeat you.”
Distracting her from his surprising words, the bulge in his jeans was hardening, both alarming and exciting her. After all, he had the kind of face and body to die for. Sera had no intention of dying.
“Okay, celebrate!” she spat. “You’re stronger than me.”
His lips twitched. “I was thinking of Nicholas Smith. But now you mention it, yes, I am.” His fingers lingered over her vein, stroking. She shivered, trying not to feel the spurt of physical pleasure that was in danger of drowning out her alarm, especially when he swayed his hips in a slow, sensual caress. His erection rubbed against her tummy, and she had an insane urge to stand on tiptoe to feel it grind between her legs. “And, you know, I like that too.”
“Why?” she got out, reaching wildly for the smart comment that somehow eluded her.
His fingers slid upward to her face once more, and he traced the outline of her lips. “Because I can kiss you without you feeling the need to stop me.”
She narrowed her eyes threateningly, although her heart seemed to plunge right through her stomach to her womb. “It won’t be the need that’s lacking,” she managed.
“But you like the way I look,” he pointed out, pressing gently on her lower lip to part it from the upper. “I’ve read it in your mind.”
“Doesn’t mean I want you slobbering all over me!” Oh Jesus, what would it feel like?
“I won’t slobber,” he promised and bent his head.
She couldn’t have avoided it. She refused to dent her dignity further by trying. So she glared into his face, daring him, while her heart thundered in treacherous anticipation. His lips hovered over hers for an instant, just long enough for her to panic that perhaps he was changing his mind and wouldn’t do it, after all. She felt an urge to close the distance herself—only to break the tension, of course. And then he did it, sliding his fingers away from her lips to cup her face and sinking his mouth into hers with blatant, wonderful, terrifying sensuality.
There was none of the buildup she was used to, the gentle brushing of lips, the soft, quick kisses that grew deeper and longer. It was an outright assault on her senses, and it was devastating. His lips were cool and firm as they moved on hers, savoring, almost as if he were drinking from her. Oh shit, don’t think drinking here! He opened her mouth wider for his tongue, which swept around her teeth and curled around her own, drawing it into his mouth. She tried to speak, but the attempt got lost in the shock of his long, sharp teeth under her tongue. Blood drummed in her head, a tattoo of fear all mixed up with wonder and sheer, unadulterated lust.
A weird sound came from her mouth, and he deepened the kiss, almost grinding his mouth into hers, demanding the response she found it impossible not to give. There had never been a kiss like this one, fierce and overwhelmingly sexual, driving all thought from her head but the gratification of desire. She melted into it, opening wide for him, winding her tongue around his, sucking and biting his lips, drawing him deeper in.
At some point, he’d begun to grind his hips too, rubbing himself against her, and she found herself moving with him, standing on tiptoe and pressing back to try to assuage the aching need between her thighs.
When she almost ran out of breath, he broke the kiss and smiled. “Oh yes,” he whispered in her mind. “All night with you. All night and day, and all night again…” His words drove her to fever pitch, eliciting a helpless mewl of desire as she reached for his mouth once more.
He gave it with enthusiasm. His hands were on her hips, stroking down to her thighs and dragging upward inside her jacket and over the sides of her breasts. She moaned into his mouth, felt his thumbs caress her desperate nipples over and over. She wanted them on her naked breasts. She wanted no clothes at all between them. She wanted him buried deep inside her, pounding her to the greatest, sweetest orgasm of her life. More than that, she yearned to blast his control to hell, to make him lose himself in the pleasure she could give him. She was sure no one had ever wanted her this much before.
She squirmed against him, dragging her arms free at last to loop them around his neck and comb her fingers through his soft hair. His hands cupped both her breasts, making her gasp, and swept downward to the fastening of her jeans.
She tore her mouth free to gasp, half laughing, “Oh stop! We can’t! This is a respectable street! People are bound to pass.”
“I don’t care. I want you now. Just for starters. I want to make you scream as you come the first time, see your face in the open air as you fall apart around me. Oh yes.”
She caught his head as he plunged back for her mouth, his fingers determinedly unfastening the buttons of her jeans. “Blair, no!”
He paused and raised his head, his eyes black and clouded with lust. “Admit it. You want me to fuck you.”
She caught the golden flash in his dark eyes, glimpsed the pointed fangs between his parted lips, and swallowed hard. “Does it come with blood drinking?”
“Oh yes…”

Mrs. Jones

Publisher: Taylor Street Publishing
Date of Publication: April 7, 2012

ISBN: 978-1468116885
ASIN: B006OEVRBM

Number of pages:256
Word Count: 88.000
Cover Artist: Bradley Wind

Book Description:

A British girl with a secret. A New York cop with a past. And a mob that wants revenge In the slickest, sexiest novel to come out in a long time, ruggedly tough and honest cop Detective Tommy Connell picks up an English girl, Mrs Jones, who claims to be the witness to a murder, and falls in love with her. Well, Mrs Jones, whoever she is, must be very attractive because an awful lot of people seem to want to get their hands on her if they can get her away from Connell's determined hands, including some organized crime boys along with the Feds.

Detective Connell definitely has his work cut out for him if he wants to end up with the body of Mrs Jones, dead or alive, that's for sure. All-in-all it's probably safe to say he hasn't a clue what is going on. It is probably equally safe to guess that Mrs Jones does. Not that 'safe' is quite the right word to use here.

Author Bio:

B.A. Morton is a British crime, historical and romance writer.

Her first novel is 'Mrs Jones'. The next in the series, 'Molly Brown', will be published during 2012.

She lives and writes on the Scottish Border.

Interview with ML Guida

I would like to thank Roxanne for allowing me to big here.  I would love to hear back from any of you and would be willing to answer any other questions you have!

What books/authors have influenced your life?

There are three authors who have influenced my life.  Stephen King, Sherrilyn Kenyon and J.K. Rowling have influenced my life.  Each of them experienced both successes and rejections, but what they all had in common is tenacity.  I don’t know why but each of these authors received 30 rejections letters before they won their big contract.  When I receive a rejection letter, I think of them and reach deep inside and strive to improve my craft and take the next risk.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

I would have to pick some of the authors who belong to the Colorado Romance Writers.  Once again, there are three:  Lizzie T. Leaf, Melissa Mayhue and Elaine Levine.  They have given me advice, helped me with my craft and become someone I try to inspire.

Another writer who does belong to CRW but has left her mark on me is Lori Wilde.  Lori Wilde is a contemporary writer and an amazing teacher.  I have taken several classes with her through Savvy Authors and she is my guru.

What book are you reading now?

If you can believe it – Fifty Shades of Gray.  I never wanted to read it, but my book club picked it and its better than I thought.  The heroine intrigues me and I have to keep reading me.  Also, there is some vulnerability in the hero and I have to know how he became this way.

What books are in your to read pile?

I have several books in my reading pile:  Little Red Riding Wolf by Jessica Aspen and The Rogue Pirate’s Bride by Shana Galen.  They are both good, but I got sucked into Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James.  I probably won’t read the other two, but I will finish the first one.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I am currently writing a historical paranormal book called A Pirate’s Curse.  I’m taking a Lori Wilde’s editing class and working on this project.  I hope to be pitching this book in the next several months.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

A Pirate’s Curse takes place in the Caribbean during the year 1671.  A British Captain leaves three men infected with small pox on an uncharted island and wipes out the majority of the Natives, including a shaman’s daughter.  The Shaman prays to his Underworld God and asks for revenge.  A demon arrives and cast a spell on the lake.  Any who drink from it, change into a vampire during the full moon.  Kane O’Brien drinks from the lake and he vows to break the curse, but in order to do so, he must hand over the British Captain’s daughter, knowing she’ll die.  Will he do it?

On the pirate book, I had to do research on pirates, the ships and the language.  Writing a historical is never ending and writers have to get their facts straight.  I want my book to sound authentic.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

Lex Valentine designed my book cover as well as my book trailer.  She is fabulous and I plan on using her in the future.
