Interview with Anthony Sunderland

What inspired you to become an author?

The series one finale of Buffy TVS. I had instinctively known from the start of the series that the demons were actually metaphors for teen angst. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s performance blew me away, and I just knew I wanted to write something so good that she would want the challenge of playing the part.

Nothing like starting off with a big dream, is there?

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

I try to title it early on. it gives me a sense of what it is about and where it is going. Sometimes I get it right first time, but if not it bugs me until I do.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I want them to connect to characters, to realize that Dawn is complex, and driven by strong needs and a sense of duty that overrides her own desires and wants. I haven’t set out with a definite message here but if I had done I feel it would be better for the readers to discover it for themselves. Otherwise I’ve not done my job if I have to explain or point it out.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

I didn’t realize it when I set out but the characters in ninety percent of what I write are in search of something. They are on quests that will lead them to deep profound answers about themselves.

And in ninety percent of the above they have issues to resolve with a parent or child. I’m not saying the relationships are dysfunctional, damaged, or broken in anyway.

These are not metaphors for repairing relationships, but for finding a new deeper bond or connection. Maybe it will resonate with readers or maybe not. I lost my mother recently after a long illness, and I know it is going to be extremely difficult to deal with the issues of loss that I’ve got planned for certain stories.

I’m fortunate that we always had a good relationship but there’s still a sense of wanting to have done more.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I’m nearly halfway through Vol III, which I now hope to release for Xmas. I have a story for Vol IV, which will also see further developments in the relationship between Dawn and Scott, her ongoing attempts to free the alien, and reveal more secrets about AVI.

I’ve cut fifteen thousand words from Vol III which I will use in a later story.

Part 3 of the ’59 epic should also be released for Xmas.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

In a word; virtually everything. The initial stream of story ideas came pretty fast but then came the problem of which one to work on first. Plotting, character development, writing the first draft, editing, promotional work. You name it, it is tough and mentally challenging.
If you want the world to engage with your characters and share their adventures, trials, disasters, and triumphs then you have to force yourself to overcome all the obstacles.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

lazerK @ elance.com

Do you have any advice for other writers?

If you have the passion and burning desire to tell your stories then you will find a way to do it. If writing seems like something that would be ‘nice’ to do, then quit now and save yourself a ton of heartache. I’ve met many talented writers at conferences, classes, and workshops who have dropped out when the reality of how tough and unforgiving this business can be.
Ask yourself if you can put up with the long lonely hours in front of a computer screen or with pencil and paper. The rejections and heartache. If the answer is 100% yes, then resolve now that you are never going to quit.

Do you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this book?

In several other stories I’ve got a great selection of song choices that would make stunning soundtracks. Sometimes the scene suggests the song and sometimes a song suggests a scene that I would never have thought of otherwise.

Not many songs have suggested themselves for this series. The theme tune would be Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the heart,” and I would want the Meatloaf duet “Don’t You Look at Me Like That,” plus (for a scene I can’t even hint at) Brian May “Too much Love Will Kill You.”

Am I the only one to lament the passing of an era when songs told stories, stirred up emotions, and painted vivid images. Or is my condemnation of the mass manufactured, soulless rubbish just another sign of old age?

Why I Hate Vampires Guest Blog and Giveaway with E Van Lowe

Okay, now that I've got your attention I have to admit, I don't really hate vampires. I just have a bone to pick with them.

When I was a kid I loved vampire movies.  Bela Lagosi's black and white Dracula, Peter Cushing's Dracula, with so much outrageously red Technicolor blood it should have been laughable. But it wasn't. It was really, really scary. And who can forget the original Salem's Lot. The movie was as good as the book. I had to sleep with the lights on for a week after I saw it.

When my mother would let my older brother and I watch horror movies, I would always shut my eyes at the scary parts. "What's happening now?" I'd say. "What's happening now?" My brother was so cool.  I'd say things like: "Is it okay to open my eyes now?" and he'd say "Yes." But never to trick me into seeing something ghastly, only when it was safe.  As a child I must have sat through 100 horror films, but I can't honestly say I saw any them all.  And that's my point. Vampires used to be gruesome, ghastly creatures that scared the bejesus out of us. They had an equally scary man servant, who from what I remember, ate spiders or rats. Yech!

Fast forward to Bill Compton, Edward Cullen and Damon Salvatore.  And if you don't know who these guys are, you’re not into vampires.  What they are is gorgeous. These are beautiful vampires.  I mean, come on, even I think they're beautiful and, trust me, I like girls. When I was a kid you can bet if a vampire tried to bite me I'd run like hell. But today, I'd have to think about it. What guy doesn't want to be thought of as attractive by beautiful women? Hey, and even if they don't think you're attractive right off, you just glam them, and bam, sexy lady is all yours.  So yeah, I wouldn’t run from a vampire.  I actually might run toward one.  Today’s vampires are rock stars.  And they don't even have to sing or play an instrument.

So now for my confession. I don't hate vampires. In fact, I am jealous of vampires. I want to be a vampire.  Not the ghastly gruesome vampires of my youth, but the handsome, sexy vampire of today.

If I ever meet Damon Salvatore, I am going to invite him to dinner--Me!  The only way I'd pass on dinner with Damon is if someone introduced me to Eric. And ladies, I'm warning you, if I get made by Eric--look out!

Now that I’ve had some fun with you, I’m hoping to glam you a little bit into checking out my new novel, The Zombie Always Knocks Twice.  It’s the first in my new Hollyweird series.

Don’t let the word “zombie” in the title throw you. It’s got sexy undead people in it, a really neat mystery, and a fifteen year-old necromancer protagonist, Kristine Golden, that I think you will come to love.  So look into my eyes: “read the except, and then click on the link and buy, buy, buy.”  Good bye  ;-)

Interview with the author of The Division of the Damned Richard Rhys Jones The Division of the Damned by Richard Rhys Jones

What inspired you to become an author?

It would be wrong for me to say that I was, "inspired" to be an author. I have always written, since my school days. It was just there, this need to put things down on paper. In school, English language was easily my best subject because I enjoyed it so much.
The compulsion to write fell away when I joined the army, though I did still write funny little ditties about my comrades in arms. However, when I left the forces it returned with a vengeance. I started with poems and song lyrics, then a couple of very short stories, but the step up to writing a full length novel came when I bought my first computer.
I had no excuse now, I had the means to research, write and collate everything in one place at my fingertips, so I set to it. The Division of the Damned is the end result of that process.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

Actually, a friend of mine came up with it. I had originally decided to call it, "SS Division Vampyr" and was very happy with the title until the same guy appeared at my house with a book entitled, "Operation Vampyr".

I was gutted, the title was born out of the development of the story and to me it was ingrained in the very fabric of my tome. Then Dixie, (my mate) comes along and nonchalantly breaks my world.

Anyway, picking myself up I decided to ask my friends if anyone had an idea for a new title as it was almost as if I had writer's block on the issue! The ideas trickled in and I wasn't really happy with any of them, in fact I was contemplating just going ahead with the original name and to hell with it. Then the same guy who had crushed my idea stepped up with, "The Division of the Damned".

A title was born and a friend was forgiven...

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Before writing but while laying the plot down.

What books/authors have influenced your life?

Oh dear, this could take some time...

I read for my life, seriously. If I haven't a book to hand I'm lost. Books that have influenced my life sounds heavy, but Mario Puzo's, "The Godfather" changed my appreciation of my family as a twelve year old. A violent, course book that I shouldn't have read at that age, and yet it actually instilled in me a healthy appreciation of what a family means.

Dracula, by Bram Stoker was so important to me that I've read it three times.
Michael Crichton's, "Jurassic Park" showed me the value of good research; how an outlandish idea can be backed up and made to look even possible by the use of little known facts. "Division" is so crammed with information I had to leave a lot out to stop it reading like a school book.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Either Ken Follet or Bernard Cornwall.

Both writers wrap you up in their characters so that you HAVE to know what happens to them. Facts to back up a story are good, but without the human interest, the need to have the reader care for the characters, they're nothing.

Allen Guthrie, an acquisition editor for Point Blank Press and someone who I have never actually read, once put down a piece called, "Hunting down the Pleonasms". This guy's list is pinned on my wall. If you don't know it, look it up on Google, it really is the definitive "quick" guide to writing a good story.

What book are you reading now?

"The SS. A new history" by Adrian Weale. Very well written, very factual and for a Third Reich buff like myself, a must read.

What books are in your to read pile?

Zinnman by Robert Craven and "SHARC" by Paul Rudd. They're both friends of mine so it's a must that I read their work A.S.A.P.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I have a collection of four short stories called "An age of Beasts", (working title, subject to change). They're all based around ancient Greek and Roman legends but they've been changed to give them a horror angle. For example, "The Three Hundred Spartans" are in my book the "The Vampires of Sparta". "The Wooden Horse of Troy" is a werewolf story and becomes, "The Wooden Wolf of Troy". There's also one called "The Bloody Ides of March" about Caesar being a vampire and only Brutus knows, and the story I'm working on right now is about Spartacus and his cannibal army decimating Italy. I've had a tentative nod from Taylor Street, we'll have to see if that crystallizes into something definite. Fingers crossed, eh?

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Of course, gladly. The main thread of the book is that Himmler sends a squad of SS to Transylvania to make a pact with a vampire count. The Nazis have a serum that enables the Count's vampires to face daylight with out burning to a crisp. In return the Count must provide a vampire division that will fight for the Third Reich. This is the scene where they try the serum for the first time and it all goes horribly, horribly wrong.

"We’ll soon find out Muschi," Rohleder answered him, "the sun’s up.”

He was right. The shadows behind the wall were slowly draining away as the sun’s rays solidly advanced on the test subject. Though still decked in shade, it radiated terror like a lighthouse beacon and despite the fact it was a vampire, the squad now found a waxing pity for it. Rooted to the spot, it pathetically held up its arms to protect itself from the dazzle.

Reflected off the snow the light was blinding and like a cleansing sword, it swathed its brilliant curtain into the square. With almost a glint it struck the vampire’s head and moved down its face and tunic. They all held their breath as the night was beaten back. No one knew what would happen. Finally, it was completely bathed in the brilliant dawn of the winter daybreak. They still held their breath as it slowly let its arms drop and turned to look at them.

Any compassion they may have felt for it now fell like a cannonball as it turned and, like a gloating python, smiled at them. All inwardly shied away in horror from that reptilian sneer. It looked around to find Rasch and deliberately nodded its head to him.

Von Struck looked on as it opened its arms to greet the now fully formed sun.
"My God, what have you done Rasch?” Von Struck whispered to himself.

The Doctor was ecstatic. "Look Von Struck. Look at him. I’ve done it, I’ve done..." but his words fell dead in his throat. Von Struck looked at Rasch who had suddenly stopped raving. His face had dropped and he stood there gaping, half-pointing at the Count’s man.

The tunic of the vampire was smoldering, but from the inside. The vampire stood motionless looking at his hands that were turning black and starting to peel. Blisters appeared on its face and it threw back its head to scream. Rasch flinched at the unholy shriek it let loose. It was the scream of rage and agony, of panic and confusion. Rasch turned white and sprayed vomit onto his highly polished boots. The men lined up against the wall stood numb and silent at the sight of the immolation. Although they were used to death in all its many forms, they were still traumatized by what had happened.

Its once white head was now burnt black and then it burst into flame. It made no sound or movement after the first scream and stood immobile and burning like a Celtic Wickerman. Its eyes burst with an audible pop as slowly it started to crumble and break up. The legs snapped first and as it hit the ground, the charred and still burning head came off. The light given off from the fire was now so intense it was impossible to discern what was burning.

Rasch chanted to himself, "Oh my God, oh my God" over and over again.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

The cover was designed by my very good friend Chris Salmen, a tattooist by day, graphic designer by night. He really is a talented guy and has very good rates, (free for friends).

He can be contacted at office@combatcolour.com. Chris is a very, very busy man though, please be patient if he doesn't answer straight away.

Thank you for having me here Roxanne, and thank you to your readers for reading my drivel to the end.

Richard Rhys Jones, (Reggie to his friends).

Excerpt:

“So how much do you know about St. Augustine, Chris?”

The woman driving gently touched her elegant yellow hair, careful not to mess it up with her colored nails. She spoke with a strong southern accent and was incredibly beautiful for her age, which I guessed was more than twice my age of twenty-two. Her name was Mrs. Kirk. I had just met her at Orlando Airport for the first time a few minutes before. She was waiting for me holding a sign with my name, Christian Langaa, printed on it.

The year was 1983 and I had recently finished my third year of med school at a university in Denmark. I had just left my country of birth for St. Augustine in Florida.  Leaving Denmark was my father’s idea, really. I guess he thought it was about time I left the nest, so he called in a favor with an old friend of his, an American eye surgeon, to take me in and help me get a year at a medical school “over-there.” I can’t say I was unhappy about it. At that time all kids my age wanted to go to the States where stone-washed jeans and Michael Jackson came from. His latest album "Thriller" had just been released and was played on every radio station all over the world. Like so many else I bought the cassette and played it again and again on my Walkman.

Where I came from anything that was American was considered hip and cool. That summer before I left, my friends and I had watched the movie Flashdance that made ripped sweatshirts popular and we loved the TV show Dallas and Dynasty that made everybody wear increasingly oversized shoulder pads - even us guys. We drank lots of Coke and dreamt of watching MTV, which at that time wasn’t something you could do in Europe yet and especially not in my small home-country Denmark, where we only had one national channel on our TV.

Interview and Giveaway with Jennifer Harlow

*Do you have a specific writing style?

For whatever reason, I like writing in first person present. I think it’s because they’re my favorite to read. Most people read to escape, to be transported to another world, to be another person. I know it’s why I do. While I have that book in my hands (or pen to paper) I am no longer Jennifer Harlow, I get to be a warrior. A singleton in London. Eleanor of Aquitaine. And since it’s in the present, it’s as if the action is happening right now. Of course what I like to read translates into what I like to write. Fast, funny, scary how a book should be.

*Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

I didn’t mean it to. I didn’t even realize it until I had finished my third FREAKS book (out next year) that my main character Bea’s life trajectory was following my own, though mine is minus zombies and vampire. I wrote the first FREAKS book Mind Over Monsters while I was in college. Deep down I was scared to death to have to go out into the world and get a full time job, to grow up. So my subconscious, who is far smarter than my conscious that’s for sure, forced me to subject my main character to the worst job I could think of. Nothing Jennifer Harlow could face would ever measure up to being attacked by hordes of zombies. This trend continued, still unknown to me, into the second To Catch a Vampire. When I was writing it I was in the process of moving cross country. Alone. So poor Bea had to leave the safety of her new home with an unknown element, Oliver, to face new challenges and meet new people, vampires in this case. I think maybe this is why so many people can identify with Bea and her adventures.

*What books are in your to read pile?

I’ve gotten so behind in my book reading. Right now on my Kindle I have two dozen unreads, including my friend Emily Kimelman’s mystery Unleashed about a sassy dog walker in NYC. I’m about halfway through it and love it. I also have to catch up on my Walking Dead comics, about three superhero books, and I’m slowly going through Agatha Christie’s cannon to keep up with my New Year’s Resolution on reading the classics.

*What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I signed another three book deal with Midnight Ink on top of the F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad books. The first in the Midnight Magic series What’s a Witch to Do? comes out 3/13. It takes place in the same world as the F.R.E.A.K.S., they even make a cameo, but is a stand-alone about a witch in a small Southern town who bands together with a secretive werewolf to find out who’s summoned a demon to kill her and take control of her coven. I got to write my first sex scene, which was uncomfortable as I did it in a library and was paranoid everyone knew I was being naughty. I just finished writing the second in the series and am editing it now. And I just handed in the edits on the third F.R.E.A.K.S. I don’t sleep.

*Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Here’s the elevator pitch: Special Agent Beatrice Alexander is still settling to a life as a F.R.E.A.K., wiping out zombies and other supernatural threats when she gets paired with the annoying yet gorgeous Oliver to go undercover as a married couple to infiltrate the vampire scene and stop a murderous vampire Lord of Dallas hell bent on exacting revenge. If you like flirting, humor, and boiling sexual tension you’ll like this one.

*Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Descriptions. I learned the basics of writing during my screenplay years, so dialogue and pacing are like second nature to me now, (helps that I’m a wise ass too). Descriptions, not so much. I either put in too much or too little. I hate writing them because I know I’ll have to go back a trillion times in the editing process to fix them until they’re readable. Show not tell is the bane of my bloody existence. I’ve written seven books, and I still have a problem with it.

*Do you have any advice for other writers?

Never. Give. Up. Getting to this point took me ten years, and I still have a long way to go. I’ve lost count of how many rejection letters I’ve received in that time, and they still keep coming. But I just didn’t give up. Remember The Help was rejected sixty times. Harry Potter fifteen. Just write, read, and write some more. If you want it bad enough and are willing to work for it, it will happen. I am proof of that.

*Do you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this book?

I grew up amid chaos. Even at night there was always some noise in the house so I don’t do silence. I always listen to music when I write, so at my website www.jenniferharlowbooks.com I include the playlist of every book. They’re either songs I listened to when I was putting pen to paper or a song that just fits in with the theme. Music really does add more to the writing experience, much like a movie score. So check out the website, you may just find your new favorite song.

Between contending with her fake husband’s ex-lover Marianna and feeling guilty for hiding the mission from her werewolf crush Will, Bea discovers she’s not the only F.R.E.A.K. keeping secrets. Clubbing with the undead turns bloody when Oliver's old enemy, the Lord of Dallas, decides to seek his revenge. Caught in the crossfire, Bea is up to her neck in blood-sucking trouble.
