Do
you have a specific writing style?
Yes. This gets me into trouble with reviews. I was
asked by my publisher’s editor to turn the italics off of my 1st
Person present tense internal thoughts in my 3rd Person limited
omniscient story back with my first Feral book. This lead me to a working
through the writing rule I was breaking and evolving a type of 3rd
Person limited omniscient that reads like 1st Person. Many readers
tell me it’s the only 1st Person they can read. That’s because the
actions are still 3rd Person. That’s the part of 1st
Person that I never liked because it’s jarring to me to hear “I reach for the
glass.” So, everything but actions and the dialogue tags are internalized in 1st
Person and NOT italicized in my books. My sales spiked with the books I wrote
this way. Between that and the positive feedback from readers who said they
felt like they were living the stories, I just kept writing new books and
revising old releases to read this way. If you read reviews of my books on
amazon, you’ll see what I mean about those who do not care for the writing
style. It’s scary.
Do
you write in different genres?
I write what falls under the umbrella of
“paranormal” to the Romance Writers of America—futuristic, fantasy, paranormal,
and time travel. I’ve tried to write contemporaries. Unfortunately by the end
of chapter one, the story has morphed into paranormal.
If
yes which is your favorite genre to write?
My favorite is speculative fiction. I tend to mix
paranormal with futuristic or fantasy or time travel. My brain works that way,
meaning my subconscious fights me on writing a straight sub-genre.
Do
you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?
Lately, I have so many stories backed up inside my
head that I’ve thought them out far too much before having the time to write
them. So, I usually have the title and book cover ready before writing…In the
past, I would name a book but the main idea would hit me while writing the
story. But that’s not a problem. I can change a title as long as I haven’t
already paid to have a cover designed! ;P
Is
the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone
you know, or events in your own life?
In BIG BAD BEAST, no. It was just fun to write!
What
book are you reading now?
I just finished Kaitlyn O’Connor’s THE AWAKENING.
Her cyborgs always make me giggle.
What
books are in your to read pile?
About 2500. Please don’t make me list them all! It
grows exponentially, with sales at my favorite online stores! The books tend to
be about shifters, the future, and cyborgs. I separate cyborgs from futuristics
because often the concept of human-like beings will sell the book to me. I
studied anthropology in grad school and love to find authors who look at what
it is to be human instead of just the future. And, in the end, I tend to hoard
romantica (erotic romance). I’m into the hotter side of spice!
What
is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?
Currently, I’m working on my Cyber Ops series. Book
1: SLIPSTREAM will be released in February 2012. It deals with the use of
technological implants to travel through wormholes. Of course there are aliens
and humanity’s woes resulting from the discovery of wormholes. And to stay true
to my speculative-fiction form, one alien species has shape-shifting abilities.
Can
you share a little of your current work with us?
(While hiding on the most remote
Space Marine outpost and being the only female on the planet, cosmologist
Charlotte Barley attempts to work with a small “trying” task force to discover
who is trying to kidnap or kill her using the wormhole technology she created…)
Charlotte
spread the five cards she had been dealt into a fan shape in her grasp and eyed
the big quiet corporal seated across the rectangular table where they sat in
the main room of the suite. Laurel sure
can ignore me like I'm ugly as sin, she mused. Maybe it's because sleep
evaded me for another thirty-six hours and I look like hell? Insomnia also only
served to prove that there is no OverSpace. Still, Denton, Fitzroy, and I
banged foreheads together theorizing and strategizing for an answer while
Laurel stood guard unless, of course, we broke down and played poker like now.
Call it a way to tap into new modes of constructive thinking. Playing for blood
had a way of doing that to me.
Laurel continued to study his cards.
Like he tried to avoid showing any
emotion about what he held in his hand. Certainly his hand was better than my
useless unrelated two, five, nine, jack, and king. Absolutely utterly useless.
What can I do with these pathetic cards? It's just time to head back to work.
Or something equally conducive to saving my neck. More so because Laurel's
enormous don't-fuck-with-me form is certainly giving me ideas. Maybe it's the
fact he's wearing just a tank top stretched to the damned max with dark hairs
curling over the hem near his heart? Maybe it's the fascinating linear vein on
his bulging bicep that keeps drawing my attention? Or, rather, it's the
suggestive items he's using for chips on the table…
Laurel's gaze slid from the cards in
his hand to monitor the central pile of pre-packaged instant coffee, chocolate
mints, Space Marine beer vouchers, and one long somewhat-flat golden
rectangular heat-sealed wrapper.
As if he could read my mind about
his body, leading to…What he'd tossed onto the pot. Some things were outright
necessities like instant coffee and blood. You just never know when you'll find
yourself shit out of luck, especially serving a joy of a sentence on an
uninhabited forested rock in the middle of nowhere deep space like me now,
without coffee. But Laurel was preoccupied with an item that was outright
useless on Diablo's Shithole. An Omega Tickler condom. Black Cherry Fire.
The table's bleeding.
Not good. My favorite flavor on one
heck of a scary-looking black rubber to the uninitiated. Toss in the big heat
factor that's just enough to keep a man and woman warm when shifting
positions…With all the damned ticklers on the tip and rubbery spikes protruding
along the shaft. Talk about subtle unavoidable friction that will feel like
pure ecstasy when riding a fully-engorged cock. One monster cock owned by the
Corps' prized beast across the table.
My heart swan-dived to the lowest
pit of my core and left me feeling like magma oozed between my legs.
Dear.
God.
His gaze snapped up to anchor upon
mine.
As if he's toying with me by
dangling a carrot, or he can sense my reaction to his poker chip. Rather his poker! Either way, Laurel wasn't the
type to play games. His type dives for the jugular with the Cherry-Fire-Tickler
option. Cold. Ruthless. Who in her right mind would say no to that?
Right mind. Right mind. I should
have one. But I haven't slept in two days. Let me see if I can find some right mind around here. I slid my gaze
across the boring tabletop to Fitzroy.
Do
you have to travel much to do research for your books?
No. I’m a research junkie because of my eclectic
formal education (geology & anthropology/bio-archeology). I have an
enormous personal reference library and can find information online if I need
it.
Who
designed the cover of your latest book?
Erin Dameron-Hill designs my covers. I often have a
mental picture and the images I want used. She pieces them together and adds
some of her own magic! If you need covers, I highly recommend Erin! She’s awesome…

Skhye Moncrief

ASIN: B0088DE3EA
Word Count: 38,000 words
Cover Artist: Erin Dameron-Hill (EDH Graphics)
Book Description:
Each wants the other, but neither can stand to be in the same room.
One day in the Big Woods, Normal Josie wakes up and helplessly watches a Shifter virus kill her immediate family in their remote wilderness homestead. Josie has no choice but to carry on. She's forced to brave the forested Wild alone, leading a string of pack horses with all the supplies she can manage to her uncle's Shifter outpost--back to where she became known as a little Normal female who could kick butt with the best Shifters, back to where she fell in love with the only Shifter she could ever mate. Thank goodness he isn't there. But when living among a pack of Shifters, a girl has to obey the alpha. And her alpha has secret plans for her, plans that involve the only Shifter she loves--the Shifter who now irritates the hell out of her.
Stationed at an isolated agricultural outpost with nothing but teenage hormones for company, Shifter Hostillian doesn't mind monotonous day-to-day schedules where he rules the roost. And then his inner Wolf's favorite wild cat screeches at his door. He has no desire to mate the only person who challenges everything he utters. But his Wolf makes demands the minute it catches Josie's scent.
Stand back and watch the fireworks light up the Minnesota sky because the BIG BAD BEAST can't help but to huff and puff and blow Josie's house in...
About the Author:
Aside from muscled men in fur, leather, denim, or kilts, I love cultural ecology, cultural evolution, cultural relativism, and natural processes. Big ideas. Simple concepts that manifest in world building to crazy people like me who studied anthropology and geology before turning to writing romantic fiction. My rule of thumb is to love the good, the bad, and the ugly of every culture in my tales so every aspect of my stories resonates as real as possible.
