The Setting on Just Good Friends by SL Siwik

When it came to coming up with a story, I was always told to ‘write what you know.’ So, the town that the characters live in, Mercerville, is real. But, the town does not have a ‘poor area and a wealthy area’ like the town that I wanted the characters to live in. The neighboring town did, however, so that’s the basis of Audrey’s town. I live currently only twenty minutes away from where I grew up, so I had known all of central New Jersey fairly well. Feeling so comfortable with the area that I was writing about made it easier for me to focus on characters and less on trying to envision the place.

For example, Michael’s house was written like one I saw in the town:

Also, in that town is a mobile home community and while driving around, I found Audrey’s home.

Romeo’s Diner, where Audrey works was based off of this actual diner (it just recently went out of business):

These places in the story now hold so much more significance for me now that they are based upon places that I can pass by daily if I so choose to. It made writing a fun book even more enjoyable.
