What I Do
"How do you
write?"
More than
anything, that's the question I find myself answering again and again.
How do I write.
Surprisingly, it's
a fairly easy question for me to answer.
I begin with the
titles. Since I tend to think of my
books as parts of a series, I usually get the titles set right off the
bat. And those titles often give me a
clue as to how the story will move book by book and what I'll be writing.
Then I'll sit down
and jot down notes about character, narrative, plot points. I'll figure out if what I have in my head is
actually something that could work. If
it doesn't -- and sometimes it really, really doesn't --, I toss it out,
knowing something better will come along.
If it does work --
yay! --, I then figure out how best to strengthen it. How to build it, brick by brick, so that
whatever the story is, I know it'll have the legs it needs to stand through
three full-length books.
After all that,
the real work begins.
Having the title,
the narrative, the characters, the What of what I'm writing and the How of the
foundation, I start to break it into sections, and then those sections into
chapters. Usually by now I'll have
potential opening lines and closing lines for chapters. Not always, but sometimes.
By this point, the
map in place, I sit down and write, knowing full well that, despite the careful
plotting and planning, the foundation I've built and the chapters I've mapped,
what ends up on the page may be drastically different than what I thought it
would be.
But that's
okay. The narrative is the same, it's
just the journey that's changed. And if
the narrative and the characters have solid foundations, the book won't
collapse because it ends up being somehow different than I anticipated.
At the end of the
day, even with careful planning, not even I know what's going to happen.
And that's why I
love Doing What I Do.
