Interview and Giveaway with Nancy Fraser: Entangled Flirt December Releases

What inspired you to become an author?

As crazy as this sounds … I started on a dare.  Way back in the early 1990s I worked with a woman who read a romance novel a day on her breaks and lunch hour. She offered me one to read and I politely declined and declared in the next breath, “Anyone can write one of those”. So she dared me. I went home that weekend and--for a laugh--wrote two chapters and gave them to her on Monday. She accused me of copying them from a book.
I laughed it off but then, the next weekend, I wrote two more chapters and then another two. I was hooked.

Do you write in different genres?

Yes, I also co-author historical novels set in the post-Civil War south (The McCade Legacy) with my writing partner Patti Shenberger. On my own, I also write a vintage historical series, The Golden Decade of Rock and Roll, set from 1955-1964. I believe switching up time periods keeps your perspective fresh. I’ve even done a futuristic time travel which garnered a number of Top Pick and Best Book reviews from some of the larger review sites. It’s an era I may try again sometime.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

I’m leaning toward contemporary at the moment. However, I’d be lost without checking back into the 50s-60s at least twice a year.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

I create a working title that describes what I’ve planned for the book. However, my characters sometimes highjack my plans and, with it, my title. That’s the other thing I like about the Rock & Roll series books. All the titles are song titles from the featured years, so my characters have no say in the matter.

What book are you reading now?

Tonya Burrows’ Wilde Security series. I love her snappy dialogue and to-die-for heroes.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

Currently, I’m finishing up edits on the third book in the McCade Legacy (historical) series, doing galley edits on another R&R release, and just starting edits on the first book in my All The Single Ladies series, which is a group of four stories about college friends all looking for love in all the wrong (and right) places. Plus, I’m halfway through a cowboy-themed historical set in the 1870s.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

Elizabeth Lowell (aka Ann Maxwell). Whether it’s old series romance or glossy women’s fiction, you can always count on her stories to teach you something and make you reach for a cold drink and fan.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

The absolutely fabulous Heidi Stryker. This is our third cover together and I’ve loved everything she’s done.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

For the new/struggling writer, don’t give up. When you get a rejection, use it as a learning experience. If the editor has given you some feedback, use what you can and toss the rest aside. Grow a thick skin, preferably before you release that first book. Celebrate the victories (preferably with Baileys and chocolate) and don’t dwell on the set-backs. And, for those established writers already climbing the best-seller lists … squeeze over and make room for me please!
