Interview with Lashell Collins

1. How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

Well, the name of my main character is Joshua Pierce and I just really liked the play on words with his name. Plus there's a fair amount of danger lurking around every corner in this first book so, Pierced By Danger just made since to me.

2. Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

With this one – in fact, with this whole trilogy – I waited until they were complete. But with the project I'm currently working on, the title came first. So for me, at least, I think every story is different.

3. Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

Yes, actually. And that's a really interesting question because, as I think about it, I realize that there are elements of men that I love – like my husband, my brother and my father – in each of the men in this story. There are aspects of Joshua's personality that come directly from my husband. Lee Parson, the man who is Joshua's mentor and father-figure in the story, is a great deal like my dad. And Samantha's relationship with her brother Lucas is very much like my relationship with my own brother.

4. What book are you reading now?

I'm not reading anything at the moment but I just finished tfc Parks' Rhythm in Blue and absolutely loved it. It's an amazing novel that should be getting much more attention than it is.

5. What books are in your to read pile?

Oh, I'm ashamed to say there are so many! I've been so consumed with writing and self-publishing Pierced that I've fallen way behind and missed so much. I really want to read The Education of Sebastian and its sequel, The Education of Caroline by Jane Harvey-Barrick. I want to read Rocked Under by Cora Hawks and Soulbound by Tessa Adams. And I know this is unbelievable but, I have actually never read Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. I love the movies so much but, I've never read the books and I really want to do that.

6. What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

Well my next upcoming project is to release book two in the Pierced trilogy, Pierced By Love. My target date for that is the end of April, and then book three of the trilogy at the end of May.

Besides that, I've just started working on a story that I've been thinking about for some time now. It's a romance set in the middle of a double love triangle of sorts. And what got me thinking about it was a simple question that just popped into my head one day. 'What would happen if Daddy's little girl fell in love with a man that Daddy loved, respected, envied and hated?'

7. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I honestly believe that each story presents its own unique challenges, whether it's a character or a location or what have you. But there are also outside challenges to writing as well, like sometimes simply finding the time to write or the space to write in. For me personally, both of those have been an issue during this process. But I'm hoping to change all of that; I just created a little home office for myself on the second floor of my house so, things should get better.

8. Who designed the cover of your latest book?

The covers for the Pierced trilogy were sort of a group effort between me, my husband and a graphic artist named Rob Hood from Graphics Plus More. My original idea was that I wanted the covers to feel sort of retro, like the covers of the old romance novels my mom used to read. Even though the books are erotic in nature, I didn't want the covers to be a lot of skin and beefcake, if you know what I mean. Those types of covers are nice to look at but, I really wanted there to be sort of an air of mystery to them. A hint of romance, a whisper of danger.
The rose on the cover is an Esperance rose, and those roses play a part in each book of the trilogy; they become somewhat symbolic of Samantha and Joshua's relationship so, they play a part on each cover. The gun is, of course, Joshua's Sig Sauer that he carries with him everywhere. My husband is a retired police officer so that is his actual Sig that we used for the photo shoot.

9. Do you have any advice for other writers?

I am so new to this game and so inexperienced, I can't imagine that I would have anything of value to impart to other writers. Except to tell all those aspiring writers to just write the book. You keep talking about it and thinking about it and fretting about it. Just write the book. Finish the story; complete the manuscript. The rest will work itself out.

10. Do you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this book?

Yes, I do. And music actually plays a huge role in the storyline of each book in the trilogy. Each song was chosen very carefully in order to set a mood or to get inside the head of the character thinking about or listening to the song at the time. I have a page dedicated to the soundtrack on my blog site with links to hear the songs. You can find it here: http://lashellcollins.wordpress.com/pierced-soundtrack/

About the Author:

Lashell Collins was born and raised in a small Ohio town. And although her midwestern upbringing gave her a very practical outlook on life, it didn’t stop her from daydreaming about romance and love and all the special little things that make life magical.

Lashell has always loved to write and often dreamed about pursuing her passion, but like so many of us, she allowed life and circumstances to lead her down a very different path for a long time. An avid lover of both animals and flowers, Lashell has spent the last twenty years working in Veterinary Clinics and Garden Centers before finally finding the courage to take writing seriously.

She lives in Ohio with her husband and their two four-legged children, a Bernese Mountain Dog named Ben and an American Bobtail cat called Spike. She is a hopeless romantic, a huge music fan, loves to laugh and loves a happy ending.

Covet Cover Reveals

Deceiving the Witch Next Door
Melissa Bourbon Ramirez

Down-on-her-luck witch Storie Bell never thought the biggest threat to her future would be Reid Malone, the very man she’d run from years before. After striking it rich in Texas shale, he’s back in town, and he seems hell-bent on getting in the way of her bookstore’s grand opening. A witch trying to blend in in a small southern town is hard enough, but now he’s seriously testing her strict No Kissing Mortal Men policy. But even witches don’t have a spell for that.

Reid knows there’s much more to Storie than meets the eye. But right now he has only one mission: to infiltrate her shop so he can snatch the elusive secret ingredient to his father’s million-dollar moonshine recipe. Once he does, he can go back to the city and get out of his small hometown, a place in which he has no future.

But as the days go by, he can’t help falling for Storie in every way…and every encounter brings him closer to finding out what happens when you try to deceive a witch.
Gone With The Wolf
Kristin Miller

CEO and alpha werewolf Drake Wilder has given up the search for his one true love. When he discovers that she’s a secretary in his company, Drake’s primal instincts kick into overdrive.

What he wouldn’t give to have her fingers rake over his body instead of the keyboard…

Free-spirited bartender Emelia Hudson wants nothing more than to make her Seattle-based bar succeed. But when profits decline, she slips into a dress suit and secures a nine-to-five. After learning that her bar has become property of Wilder Financial, Emelia is determined to get some answers.

Two can play the ruthless business game. If only her attraction to the boss wasn’t so intense…

When Drake’s twin brother senses that Drake has found his match—and now inherits their father’s billion dollar estate—he hatches a plan to take Emelia out. Drake vows to protect her at all costs, but he might have to pay with his own life.
Tall, Dark, and Divine
Jenna Bennett

Being the Greek god of love doesn’t mean you believe--or want--anything to do with that sappy emotion. Sure, Eros runs his matchmaking business, Made in Heaven, but finding his own love has never been part of the equation. When he spots the sweet baker who works across the street, he vows to match her with someone else before she stirs his sullen heart.

Annie Landon has given up on finding Mr. Right. What she needs is Mr. Right Here, Right Now, and this so-called “Greek God” she’s heard is on the rebound sounds like the perfect kind of distraction. But picking up the bitter workaholic is easier said than done…especially when he seems unreasonably determined to match her with someone else.

Can a woman looking for love—and the matchmaking god who wants her to find it with someone who isn’t him—have a shot at a happy ending? May the best god—or mortal—win.

The Awakening: Aidan
Abby Niles

Is the gift of eternal love a blessing or a curse?

After years of counseling grieving shifters, psychiatrist and half-shifter, Dr. Jaylin Avgar has become jaded on shifter mating. She wants to marry a human and forget about the love for eternity crap. Then she meets Aidan O’Connell, an infuriatingly laid back shifter who represents everything she doesn’t want. Yet, the more he pursues her, the more she craves a future with him. Only one thing stands in her way: death. Can she overcome her fear of losing Aidan to the one guarantee in life?

Millionaire consultant, Aidan O’Connell knows he’ll one day meet a woman who’ll awaken an unrelenting mating instinct. Unfortunately, that woman is Jaylin, who has no qualms about telling him that he and his so-called eternity can shove it. When she pushes him away, he takes a drastic step so she can no longer escape. The close proximity throws the instinct into overdrive. Can he control the need engrained in him until he’s certain she will reciprocate the bond, or will a moment of weakness doom him to hell on earth?

The Demon's Song
Kendra Leigh Castle

The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. At least, that's how it seems to Sofia Rivera when her attempt to help a friend ends in a blood-soaked confrontation with creatures that aren't even supposed to exist. With a group of rogue vampires determined not to leave a single witness to their violence hot on her heels, Sofia finds herself saddled with an immortal bodyguard—Phenex, the fallen Angel of Song.
While the vampire king roots out the corruption threatening to take down his underworld kingdom, Sofia will have to deal with a fallen angel whose dark beauty is often at odds with his ornery nature. Slowly, Sofia and Phenex give in to the strange attraction neither can deny. And as the darkness closes in around them, Phenex begins to wonder whether even the wickedest Fallen might find his own happy ending...and his heart.

Interview with Elise Sax and Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

--Many of the wacky scenes of my books are inspired by real life news stories. As a former journalist, I’m a news junkie, and I collect weird stories. The owl? Based on a true story.

What books/authors have influenced your life?

--The Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving was a big one. When I was in Vienna, I made a pilgrimage to the school he attended there. Also Victor Hugo…when I lived in Paris, I would go to his house (which is now a museum) and stare at the quill pens he used to write Les Miserables and try to soak up the genius. Yeah, I’m a nerd.

What book are you reading now?

--Joseph Anton by, Salman Rushdie

What books are in your to read pile?

--If you stood on my “to read pile,” you could reach the moon…or at least be really, really tall. I don’t have a lot of time to read these days, but I seem to have all the time in the world to buy books.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

--I’m finishing up the third book in the series: Match and Release.  Then, I’m starting a young adult series.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

--This is from Matchpoint (book two of the Matchmaker Series, which comes out July 30):
"Shut up."
"You can't take it back, now,” he said, interlocking his fingers behind his head. “OK, so I'm a great cop. Tell me how sexy I am. Tell me you want me."
"You are not sexy, and I don't want you," I lied.
"You're almost naked. When you bend down, I can see the whole triple play. It's only a hiccough to a grandslam homerun. Just say the word, and I'll come up to bat."
"You gross me out."
Spencer leaned forward, studied my face for a moment, read something there, and then popped a Dorito in his mouth. "You can't blame a guy for trying," he said.
"Focus on your work, dammit. The town is going to pieces, and there's a face out there. Why isn't anybody impressed by the face?"
"I'm impressed by the face," Spencer said.

Do you have to travel much to do research for your books?

--No. An Affair to Dismember takes place in the fictitious town of Cannes, CA, which I based on the town of Julian, CA. However, I had never been to Julian until after I finished writing the second book.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

--Don’t quit. Nobody got published by quitting.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

--Yes. When your grandma (or someone else you love or respect) tells you that you have “the gift” or a gift or anything reasonably wonderful, go with it. Enjoy.

Book Description:

Certain to appeal to fans of Janet Evanovich, Jennifer Crusie, and Katie MacAlister, Elise Sax’s hilarious series debut introduces matchmaker-in-training Gladie Burger, who stumbles into a dangerous quagmire of murder and red-hot romance.

Three months has been Gladie Burger’s limit when it comes to staying in one place. That’s why Gladie is more than a little skeptical when her eccentric Grandma Zelda recruits her to the family’s matchmaking business in the quaint small town of Cannes, California. What’s more, Gladie is also highly unqualified, having a terrible track record with romance. Still, Zelda is convinced that her granddaughter has “the gift.” But when the going gets tough, Gladie wonders if this gift has a return policy.

When Zelda’s neighbor drops dead in his kitchen, Gladie is swept into his bizarre family’s drama. Despite warnings from the (distractingly gorgeous) chief of police to steer clear of his investigation, Gladie is out to prove that her neighbor’s death was murder. It’s not too long before she’s in way over her head—with the hunky police chief, a dysfunctional family full of possible killers, and yet another mysterious and handsome man, whose attentions she’s unable to ignore. Gladie is clearly being pursued—either by true love or by a murderer. Who will catch her first?

Kaitlyn Davis Introduces us to the Midnight Fire Series- and a Giveaway

I'm Kaitlyn Davis, the author of the Midnight Fire Series—a whirlwind paranormal adventure with heart-pumping action and heart-stopping romance—and this blog tour is celebrating the release of Scorch, the final book in the series! Thank you for joining me!

One of my favorite aspects of ending this series is that my main character, Kira, finally has to choose between the two leading men—Tristan and Luke! The suspense is killing some of my readers :) And for a while, it was killing me too! So, instead of talking about Scorch, I thought I would take everyone back to the beginning—back to Ignite, the first book in my series (free wherever ebooks are sold!).

This is the third of six guest posts that will turn the attention on both Tristan and Luke as they get to tell their side of the story! We'll be revisiting a few important scenes from the first chapters of Ignite, but this time it won’t be Kira who does the talking…

Next up? Kira learns how to surf…and all hell breaks loose! It starts out as fun in the sun learning a new sport, but when Kira sees Tristan cracking jokes at her many spills, she's determined to prove him wrong. So she paddles out to the deeper waves and gets in over her head, literally. Kira wipes out hard, and Tristan is the only one around who can save her. But will he? Turns out that for Tristan, the jokes were just a cover up—a charade. And…well, you'll see :)

~~~~~~
As told by Tristan…
She's actually pretty good, Tristan thought as he eased back on his surfboard. He was trying to ignore Kira, he really was, but she was just so damn amusing. Her defiant attitude had wiggled its way into charming him, but this was the last time.
The beach was free territory, he reminded himself, and it had been Diana's idea to come. But still… he would have showed up without his friends.
Tristan loosened the grip on his board. If this was the last time he would allow himself to see Kira, then he was going to get his fill.
And, conveniently enough, she was paddling right this way—determinately not looking at him.
Like he said, adorably defiant.
A grin pulled at his lips, and even as he tried to stifle it, one corner of his mouth perked up.
A set pulled closer, waves Tristan was itching to ride, but he stayed still, waiting to see what she did. And sure enough, Kira turned, angling her board. The smile tugged wider—she was going to wipe out. Tristan knew it. The wave was too big for every part of her except her ego.
Crossing his arms, Tristan watched. Kira's head perked up over the crest of the wave…and promptly disappeared into the blue water below.
Knew it, he thought, slightly smug.
But after a few seconds, Kira didn’t surface.
He sat up, brows furrowing, but still he didn't see her head anywhere along the edge of the water.
Another wave crashed.
No Kira.
And another.
Not thinking, Tristan dove. Powerful strokes, enhanced with his supernatural strength, pulled him under the water. The cord strapped to his ankle broke—his surfboard lost to the sea. But he didn't care, because drifting through the water was a thin stream of blood, blood that smelled distinctly like the sun.
No.
No.
He paddled harder, until his feet skimmed the sand. And then he saw her, floating lifeless, a hazy shadow surrounded by blue.
His arms encased her, cradling her gently as he ran toward the surf, digging his feet into the sand. They emerged, faster than any human could, but he didn’t care what it looked like.
Kira wasn't breathing.
Urgency pressed him on.
He tried forcing air into her lungs, tried pumping on her chest, but nothing.
"Kira, come on," he prodded. It wasn't working. Something about the air in his lungs wasn't right, wasn't human enough to make a difference.
"Kira, wake up."
Finally, in a last ditch effort, Tristan slapped her cheek, hoping to shock her senses alert.
Bingo.
Kira's eyes shot open and her chest constricted.
Tristan flipped her over, hearing the liquid slush in her lungs. He rubbed her back while she coughed, spitting up half of the ocean. But then her eyes started to slip closed again…
"Kira!" Tristan slapped her gently. Annoying her seemed to be the only way to keep her alive… and he was happy to oblige. "You have to stay awake."
One lid slid open, revealing her fiery eyes. A warmth stirred in his chest. "Tristan?" Kira sighed, unconsciously smiling with the words.
The ice in his veins melted.
Stop.
Tristan mentally shook himself.
"Hello," he said, grinning despite himself.
"What happened?"
"You were being stupid."
The words rolled out before he could process them. His thoughts were spinning on overdrive, something he hadn’t experience since being a human. It was nice to feel out of control in a strange way—nice to feel giddy.
He tried not to laugh, tried to regain focus. But her eyes narrowed as her memory came back.
"Only because you were being an ass," she drawled.
A laugh slipped out.
"Come on," Tristan said, stopping the banter before he forgot who he was—what he was. What she was. "Try to sit up."
He slid an arm around her back, easing her up into a seated position. Her eyes slid to his torso, his bicep, his lips.
Tristan swallowed and looked away, at the sand, the nice boring sand.
"Ow." Kira mumbled, putting a hand to her wound.
"Yeah, your board got you pretty bad." He told her, trying to help fill in the blanks.
Kira looked at him blandly, "I know." Sarcasm dripped from her words. Defiant as always, until suddenly, "Crap! I'm bleeding."
Tristan eyes flew to the cut on her head. He hadn’t even smelled it. Odd.
He studied it, now unable to look away, and leaned closer. His nose pushed him forward, drawn in by the smell of her blood—it practically sang with power.
Fangs dug painfully into his lips. He tried to force them back.
"Tristan, tell it to me straight. How bad is it?"
He jerked, silently thankful for the distraction, and forced his eyes back to the beach, closing off his senses as much as possible.
"It's nothing. You'll be fine. Might need a few stitches." His words were short, tense, as he tried to regain control. He lifted Kira easily, taking her off his lap and sitting her down next to him on the sand, gaining some much needed distance.
"Thanks," she said softly, insecure, "for helping me, I mean."
Tristan met her eyes, fighting the equal amounts of hunger and passion stirring in his chest. Losing the battle, he turned and grabbed an unguarded towel. After a momentary debate, Tristan put it against her head, muffling the smell of her blood. It helped clear his thoughts.
Cleared them just enough for another smell to leak in.
A conduit smell.
A very angry conduit smell.
Tristan looked up just in time to see Luke running across the sand.
