Hello there, thank you so much for joining me at Roxanne’s fabulous site. Shall we sit down for a chat with a lovely cup of tea? I’ve baked some nice scones. Are you settled in and comfortable? Then let’s talk about steampunk and why I love it.
Steampunk, what is it? There are a number of definitions and subgenres.
To me steampunk means taking the 1800s and advancing the technology to
today’s standards, including mobile phones, computers, and transportation, but
powered by steam. A large number of the books I have read are set in Victorian
England, but it can be any part of the world. Or it can be set in fantastical
worlds.
I didn’t realize I was reading steampunk when I became a fan of Stephen Hunt’s writing and the worlds he created in
“Court of the Air” and “Kingdom Beyond the Waves”.
Then I began to hear the words “steam” and “punk” being bandied about. I saw
pictures showing people in amazingly detailed costumes...with gears and cogs
and other brass apparatuses such as goggles or pneumatic guns. I had to find
out more about these compelling images, so I did what I always do when a
subject interests me: I read.
And discovered a whole new world.
I love to write steampunk because it gives me the chance to combine my love
of science fiction and history. I can also add magic and paranormal aspects,
include fantastical creature or keep everything realistic. The possibilities
are endless.
Danger by Dalliance, for example, is set in a world very similar to
historic Victorian London. The one difference is that scientist and engineers
have gained Her Majesty’s favour and have built a level of power to rival the
peerage. Not something that went over too well with certain members of the
aristocracy. It is a ménage in which my heroes, Archer and Warren, have to hide
their love from the outside world because homosexuality is illegal (it was
illegal in England until 1967).
Then I have a Christmas novella, and first book in a new series,
releasing from Loose Id in December in which Queen Victoria passed the Equal
Rights Act shortly after she took the throne, meaning my heroine can work, vote
and own property, but somehow she still has to prove herself on a regular
basis. Sound familiar?
I fell in love with the possibilities and opportunities steampunk gives
you to build worlds and marry historic events and mores with cool gadgets and
fabulous science.
And throwing in some toe-curling sexy men and sassy heroines makes it
even more fun.

About the Author:
Tina Christopher spent her early years flitting across the Channel between Germany and England. After touring the world extensively, she finally laid down roots in Toronto. And while Canada’s winters may be frigid, Tina’s characters are anything but!
Like most writers, Tina often hears voices in her head, but it took the encouragement of an editor friend before she actually put fingers to keyboard.
While those first stories will never see the light of day, she’s subsequently honed her craft and learned to build not just worlds, but entire galaxies. Her first book from Ellora’s Cave features a galaxy filled with Vampires, Humans and angel-like aliens called Naema.
When not imagining far away worlds and scorching hot encounters, Tina can be found on her sofa working through her never-ending TBR pile or venturing into the real world—whether to a nearby café or a passport-required destination. She’s a member of the RWA’s Toronto chapter. Her two degrees in environmental conservation, majoring in large animal studies, come in handy when wrestling with supernatural beasties.
