Intervew and Giveaway Covenant by Sabrina Benulis

What inspired you to become an author?

My own obsessive love for certain television shows, movies, and book series always contributed to my desire to create worlds and characters of my own. I'm not an incredible sketch artist or cartoonist, and I don't make movies. I guess you could say writing is my medium of choice to get all of those crazy ideas out into the real world.

Do you write in different genres?

I look at myself as primarily a fantasy writer, usually with dark undertones. I'm not sure if I will branch out in the future. That certainly depends on a lot of different factors.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

It just kind of came to me, and was originally supposed to refer to another element of the story. But then it evolved into 'covenant' as in a special kind of bond between people, and like any other author, I'm a slave to what the story asks of me and I have to adapt. But I'm really happy with how everything fit together in the end. It really fits the theme of the book perfectly.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

I do tend to title a book first, but there are times when the title needs to be changed to better suit the story later on. But essentially, I feel like a need a name to work with rather than plain old 'Document 1.'

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

If there is any particular message, it's perhaps that some kinds of love are precious and special enough to deserve their own name to define them.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

Not at all, and trust me, if you read the book you will understand why that is a good thing. I'm not too keen on entering the Door to Hell myself.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

For me the most challenging part of writing a story is trying to keep your audience happy. It stinks, but every author has to eventually come to terms with the idea that not everyone will like their book. When I sit down to write, I try to write in a way that I feel will appeal to most expectations, but in the end, you never know how people are going to react to what you've written until everything is set in stone and beyond the point of change.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

An amazing graphic artist named Nekro did the cover for Covenant and for its prequel Archon. He likes to do compositions with a very gothic feel, which was perfect for this book series.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

No matter what happens, no matter how hard it is to write, or how much the odds have stacked against you, or even if heaven forbid the rest of the world tells you to stop writing--never, ever stop. Never.
