WITCH

With the blood of an Anathergian and a witch running through her veins, Leah is a force to be reckoned with. After leaving her foster family to learn how to master her new-found powers, Auden finds her.  With him, she discovers her heritage, her strength, and her love.

An Anathergian is using variant strains of his DNA to turn humans into Anathergians.  This enemy’s goal: use the Variants to take over the world and take Auden’s place as king.  Auden and Leah’s goal: Stop the enemies and discover what connections Leah has with them.

Excerpt from Chapter 4:

He stood inside the entrance as the doors closed behind him. His gaze was drawn to a slim calf covered in black denim hanging over the arm of a wing back chair facing the desk. A black Converse shoe bounced up and down. Then a dark head with gray eyes peeked at him from around the edge of the chair. The girl’s near-black straight hair was cut at an angle where it touched the tip of her chin on one side of her heart shaped face and ended at mid ear on the other side.
He took a step forward, ready to reach for her. It was an instinctive reaction and one he had never done before. He held himself still.
His insides sang to the tune of another like him. Oh, yes, she is most definitely of Anathergian blood.
With reddened cheeks, she twisted away.
Marla reached her desk. Glancing from Auden to Leah, she gestured toward the girl. “Auden, please meet Leah.”
The girl gave a halfhearted wave at him from beyond the chair. Auden raised an eyebrow at Marla. The woman’s brow creased and she shook her head, her curls bobbing against her cheeks. “Leah, have manners, if you please.”
“I waved hello, didn’t I?” said a sulky voice from the seat.
Marla’s mouth went tight, and then she motioned for Auden to come forward. He approached the side of the desk to get a better view of the girl.
She was slight, but not too thin. Her long, shapely legs, emphasized by the tight jeans, seemed to go on for days. Her short-sleeved fitted black t-shirt had a drawing of a face with Xs for eyes. His gaze stopped at her pert breasts that stood from the shirt for a moment. When he realized where his stare had strayed, he brought his perusal higher. A pale, sateen neck gave way to a stubborn jaw line. Parted wine lips made his throat parched. Her straight nose was almost too big for her face, but it went well with her angled chin. A gunmetal glare shot sparks at him and she bounced her leg to an agitated tune. It was apparent she was not happy about her current situation. He could commiserate, but it didn’t mean he would give into her rancor.
#
Leah scrutinized the man who, according to Marla, had come to bring her to his people for training. He was someone Marla trusted and the training would help her grow. As if. Leah already had people to train her. Here, at Sanctuary. She didn’t need his people. And what could his people teach her she hadn’t already excelled at?
She tilted her head back and glared at him, giving him her best As if I care look. But, jeez, was he huge! Holy crap, he could probably take down a bull without using a horse or rope. His eyes were as dark as the deepest depths of the ocean and churned with as much life as those seas. She idly wondered what treasures were hidden there. When Leah studied his face, she thought of exotic Egyptian pharaohs. He wore a black, long-sleeved buttoned shirt made of a soft material that kissed his muscles like a lover. His jeans molded to his muscular thighs and extended over black boots.
His gaze gave her a once over so thorough she had to subdue the urge to squirm. Instead, she notched her chin higher. When he continued to scrutinize her, she said, “You can stop staring.”
Marla’s intake of breath sent a small pang of guilt through Leah’s chest, and she sent the woman a quick apologetic look. Glancing back at Auden, she noticed a slight lift at one corner of his mouth. She covered her own twitching smile and instead showed a sudden interest in the wood beams lining the ceiling.
“What have you told her?” His baritone timbre made Leah think of swimming in a serene lake with cool water surrounding her. It calmed her.
“I told her we have known each other for quite some time and I trust the training she will receive with you will be beyond reproach,” answered Marla.
Irritated, Leah let out a small harrumph. “I’m sitting right here. Please don’t talk about me as if I’m not right in front of you.”
“Oh,” he regarded her up and down, “do you wish to join the conversation?”
That’s it! After the morning she had, she wasn’t going to let this guy push her around. She stood, taking fast steps toward him. “Do I wish to join the conversation? You”—she pointed at him—“bet I do! Why am I going with you? What type of training can you give me”—she pointed a thumb at herself—“that I can’t learn here?” She gestured with her hands indicating the school. “What makes your people”—she poked her finger into his chest and became even more annoyed because he didn’t even flinch—“so much better than the people I have here?” She indicated the school again.
“Leah, this is unacceptable behavior,” interjected Marla, her voice high with angry disappointment.
Auden, who hadn’t moved a muscle during Leah’s tirade, spoke to Marla. “It’s fine, Marla. I can handle this.”
“Handle? Handle? Seriously?” Leah sputtered. “Do you think you’re just going to ʻhandle’ me?” She made quotation marks with her fingers.

“Right, then, I’ll leave you to it,” Marla said to Auden and headed toward the double doors.

Top Ten Songs for The Devil's Jukebox

The Devil’s Jukebox

There’s music in the title, music in the chapters, and a playlist at the end of the book. Music, in this novel, is the driving force behind the Muses—and here are my top ten songs that inspired the story contained within the Devil’s Jukebox.

1 - Nick Cave - Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow. So many songs by this man could fit into this list, but this one gets me dancing behind the keyboard. Perfect for that winter writer’s block.

2 - The Cure - The Exploding Boy. This was the B-side to the In Between Days 7”, which I’ve been carrying around with me since 1985. It was a high point in my days of being the Happiest Goth.

3 - Christian Death - Romeo’s Distress. This song was a direct inspiration for a scene in the novel. I wrote the scene with this song in mind before I had a place to put it, and then eventually I wrote my way to the place where it fit. It moves like a desert drive down an empty highway. A soundtrack moment.

4 - 54*40 - Yank. Not an obvious choice, but it’s another song that moved into the novel. A deep dark rolling groove that feels like it should always be somewhere within the Devil’s Jukebox.

5 - The Gun Club - My Dreams. Whiskey fueled punk rock jangle for that long highway drive. This song is so upbeat and at the same time so damn heartbreaking. The Gun Club helped me get to the end of the story. “They were supposed to be my dreams…”—so much ache in one simple line.

6 - Low - Canada. This is what I would call Heavy Mellow. The oceanic drive of the music under the ethereal vocals keeps me drifting across distance. It pushes me across pages, and when the song ends I listen to it again just so I can keep writing. An expansive longing that I try to focus into certain words.

7 - David Usher - St. Lawrence River. There are so many fantastic songs in his repertoire, but this one seems to be the song that inspires my own personal Muses. Dark, beautiful, melancholic, romantic.

8 - Oversoul Seven - Roses. A slightly obscure track, but this song kills me. Romantic pop perfection.

9 - Peter Murphy - I’ll Fall With Your Knife. Smooth and sultry, dark and romantic. The man from Bauhaus paints a longing beauty that I can only hope to touch within my own writing.

10 - Slow - Have Not Been The Same. Vancouver punk rock circa 1986. This song paints a perfect picture of getting sick of high school and wanting to get the hell out of that place I was supposed to call home.

Now, if you had a jukebox that could bring your best memories back into vivid almost three-dimensional recollections… what would you pick?

excerpt i’ll melt the world and stop for you

A day later, a night later. Jonathan stares at the drink in front of him. His plan had been to go to Swampland to see a band play and then head for home, alone, but instead he’s standing in a motel room with Pandora.
They stare at each other. Jonathan feels dizzy. He should have gone home.
Pandora sits on the bed, pulls a cigarette out of her purse, and lights it, slowly looking up at Jonathan. She motions for him to sit next to her. He sits back in the chair by the window, which is cracked open and lets in a thin stream of blue neon light and a constant murmur of traffic moving down Sunset Boulevard.
Jonathan shakes his head. He has to ask: “Where have you been?”
“Nowhere.” A thin stream of smoke slices across the room. “Drink?”
Jonathan nods. She pours them each a glass of whiskey, and he just keeps watching her. She pulls a curtain aside and gazes out the window. Suddenly he feels the urge to reach out, touch her. He stares into his drink instead. She turns and smiles.
“It has been a long time, hasn’t it Johnny?”
She kneels down on the floor in front of him, cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other, wrists resting on Jonathan’s knees.
The blue light slides across her like a shadow of pain.
He wants to lean forwards and kiss her. She wants him to. There’s a hint of a smile on her lips, the one he doesn’t trust.
“You’re not going to make this easy for me are you?” she asks.
“This is going to end badly,” Jonathan replies.
“I know. It’ll end in tears; everything does. But why worry about the ending? The beginning is always so sweet.”
Jonathan shakes his head, and she reaches up to touch the side of his face. She stands, pulling Jonathan up with her.
“I need another drink,” he says.
Pandora steps back and slides a hand down his chest, lingers, and then turns towards the bottle. He should leave.
“Pandora…”
“No, you aren’t going yet. You came here to talk to me, so let’s talk. I promise I won’t bite.”
“Right.”
She laughs. “Have you decided?”
Not really… “Yes. But I need a little more time.”
“You aren’t planning anything… sneaky, are you?” Pandora slides back, moving against Jonathan.
“No, but Phillip knows that you’re back, and I’m supposed to find you.”
Pandora grins, snakelike. “I’ll tell you what, my little Johnny Jewel. You don’t find me, and I’ll give you what you want.”
“That’s all?” Jonathan asks.
Pandora moves behind him, pressing against his back. Her hands on his shoulders, her lips right against his neck, whispering, “And maybe, maybe you’ll let me know where his precious little jukebox is? You can be my secret agent man…”
Jonathan shivers, and he can’t tell if it’s from desire or fear. Probably both. He doesn’t want to do this, not to Phillip, not to Kalinda, but if he can buy more time, he might be able to figure a way out.
He nods, slowly, and Pandora sits on the bed. Jonathan sits back in the chair. She reaches out with the bottle, he answers with his empty glass.
“I thought you were in New York,” Jonathan says.
“I was, but what I need isn’t there.”
“I guess it wasn’t in Denver either, unless you’re just following me.”
“Oh Johnny, I didn’t follow you, I was just passing through.”
“I don’t know about that.” Jonathan stares at the glass in his hand, shakes his head. “Why don’t you put on some music?”
“Changing the subject?”
“Hopefully.”
Soft, slow, and sad, the music moves out and mixes with the blue light, the cigarette smoke.
True love travels on a gravel road.
Jonathan feels the haze of the motel room slip inside his head. Everything shifts slightly and the world is pushed into a soft blur. It’s kind of relaxing.
Pandora stands next to him and puts a hand on his back. He’s finding it very hard to focus.
“Pandora.”
She leans in closer. “Remember how we were in Denver?”
“I remember. But you left.”
“I always leave.”
“I can’t do this anymore.”
“Why not? You’ve got nobody else.”
“That’s not exactly true.”
“Then why are you here?”
Jonathan isn’t sure how to answer. The warmth, the night, the look in her eyes as she pulls him back towards the bed. He should leave; he can’t leave. He feels like the world is spinning too fast, while the room is moving in the opposite direction, slow motion. A blur of desire.
He feels like he’s been drugged. He wouldn’t put it past her, but he does wonder why.
As a lit cigarette slowly burns away a tight line of red slides softly into his view. There’s a slick shine against the contrast of her pale veins and faraway eyes. A cross slowly takes shape on the curve of her arm; blood pulling memory out of skin. The cigarette, forgotten, burns away. Red leaves soft marks on the bed. She whispers Jonathan’s name, wants relief from the pain. His hands soothe her arm and then down across her chest, leaving four red streaks that glisten on her smooth stomach. Such pale skin.
She turns, facing him. Her fingers move up and under his shirt. She whispers against his ear, “Stay with me.”
“Pandora.”
He doesn’t miss her; he does miss what they had.
Some of what they had.
Pandora has a way of getting to him. A touch, a look, a whisper. She knows it too. Jonathan stretches out, wishing, wanting, getting caught in flashes of flesh-colored memories. Her lips yearning, his fingers sliding…
He’s pressing his mouth against the warmth of her neck. He breathes in her pulse. His hands, his fingers, move down, feeling her breathe. Touching the scar on her belly like a funeral procession, and down…
They move in silence and memory. Jonathan knows this shouldn’t be happening, but he knows it has to. He tries to sit up, but he can’t seem to move.
Pandora whispers, “Just stay.”
Her figure curls soft around his memory, and he’s holding onto nothing again.

Ava will have to uncover the mystery before she becomes its next victim.

Excerpt: Prologue

It had been at least three years since he had left New Orleans, Louisiana and Auguste Cheval still wasn’t sure if he had made the right decision in returning. It didn’t feel right, yet he no longer had the option to stay away. His father had skipped out on him again leaving him no choice but to live with his uncle Prosper Cheval.
Uncle Prosper was absolutely crazy. He refused to live in town preferring instead to live out in the Bayou. Auguste had to make the long trek from town to his uncle’s shack each and every day, to and from his high school. Auguste attended Ben Franklin, in part thanks to his social worker, who for some reason or another seemed focused on making sure he stayed the course. His social worker Phillips believed that Auguste had the grades and the drive to excel at school; a school where nearly everyone excelled at one thing or another.
The only issue Auguste had was that a normal life could never be in the cards for him, but he wasn’t about to tell his social worker Phillips just why that was. How could he even begin to explain it?
As Auguste headed deeper into the Bayou he ventured down a narrow pathway that was nearly completely covered over with knee high marshway cordgrass. Auguste had taken the long way home as he was in no hurry to return. His uncle Prosper probably wouldn’t be there, more than likely he was out checking on his traps.
A slight sound came from his left. Something heavy was pushing through the marshway cordgrass, but Auguste couldn’t see what it was. So he waited. He didn’t want to move any further until he could see it clearly. In the light of the fading sun, Auguste held his breath as he waited to identify what moved in the cordgrass. In spite of the fact that the sun had reached the horizon, the air remained hot and humid enough to cause his clothes to stick to his body.
A man in his early forties rolled out of the cordgrass falling right in Auguste’s pathway. The man rolled until he was on his hands and knees, he lifted his head high up in the air, his chin tilted skyward and his eyes closed. He smelled the dry stillness in the air. His eyes opened and he quickly shifted toward Auguste. His eyes locked in on Auguste and his head made a rather sharp movement almost like a wolf finding the scent of his prey.
As the man’s eyes focused sharply on Auguste, a deep low growl escaped his throat. The eerie sound was so disturbing that it caused Auguste to feel ill. As the man leaned onto his back legs ready to pounce on Auguste, a wolf jumped out of the marshway cordgrass and latched onto the man’s throat, dragging him onto the ground and ripping at his flesh.
He tried to fight back, sinking his teeth into the wolf’s coat, but to no avail as the wolf tore fiercely away at him. The man screamed out in pain against the assault. Sudden silence signaled that the man had given up the fight. His body grew limp as his life began to ebb, leaving him unable to endure anymore.
The wolf turned and shifted toward Auguste, it took a step towards him with a giant paw. The wolf had an unearthly presence as its paws were large and sunk into the earth with each heavy step. Its head was slightly larger than the rest of the body giving it a disproportionate appearance. The wolf’s green eyes looked like they had seen centuries of war and chaos and were filled with a sadness that tore at Auguste’s heart. In spite of his feelings, Auguste found the hint of darkness lurking beneath the wolf’s demeanor disturbing. It was a darkness that wouldn’t think twice about attacking Auguste and harming him, just as it had killed the man without hesitation.
Auguste held out his arm as if to prevent it from coming any closer. As he did so, the fading sunlight illuminated the scar that ran from the outside of Auguste’s elbow to the inside of his middle forearm. The wolf sniffed at him before taking another step; then, as quickly as it had appeared, it turned and ran back into the cordgrass leaving behind the lifeless body of the man it had just killed for sport.
