Interview and Giveaway with Maureen O. Betita

What inspired you to become an author?

Reading. So much reading… And wanting more, something I couldn’t find. So I write it.

Do you have a specific writing style?

Jet fueled pantsing. Ready, set, go until I find an ending.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Firstly, I write very fleshy books. To the point of considering them erotica, though I’m not certain I agree with that entirely. But I’m working on it. With that said – My message is that I believe in the transformative power (magic) in good sex. From that, comes change and an awareness of all the world means to give you.

What books/authors have influenced your life?

The earliest adventure series novelists of my younger years – Edgar Rice Burroughs, creator of Tarzan. The sword and sorcery books of Michael Moorcock, Elric of Melnibone & Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser books. Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes…I loved adventure!

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

If I could choose who I could have on speed dial, it would be Jennifer Ashely.

What book are you reading now?

I’m working my way through The Discreet Gentlemen Series by Kris Tualla.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I’m currently working to complete the fifth and final novel in my Kraken’s Caribbean Series. It’s titled The Dark Dreams of Davy Jones.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Here’s the opening to The Dark Dreams of Davy Jones – A Novel from The Kraken’s Caribbean.

Emily peered at her husband, sitting across the small table at the Barmy Cock. “What do you mean you need to leave for Barbados tonight? Since when?”
“Since I received a message from Tobias, asking for a favor.”
“Oh, and you always jump to it when summoned by magic men?” She frowned and shook her head. “Tonight? Why?”
“Because I owe him and there is a vessel leaving in three hours, the soonest I can take passage.” He patiently studied her, revealing absolutely nothing.
She hated that look.
“I don’t think so. The Immortal is in port, we can go tomorrow, with them.”
“You’re not going.”
She raised one eyebrow and tilted her head. “You aren’t running off to see a magic man without me. Period. Especially if you owe him a favor. He might send you off on some errand to fetch some mystical tea from China. No traveling without me.”
“Tea from China? Where do you come up with these ideas?” He snorted. “No, you’re not going.”
“Then neither are you.” Crossing her arms she met his steely gaze with one equally determined. “I am not your sailor and you can’t order me around, Captain Controlfreak.”
He curled a lip at her, or began to do so. She saw it and knew when she’d made progress, so she didn’t push it.Time for logic.
“Honestly, Alan. Why not travel on the Immortal? And leave in the morning. No trade ship is going to make better time than your ship. I’d actually enjoy some sailing, been months since we’ve been out together. And as we sail you can explain to me why you owe Tobias.”
Her husband tried one more time to look fierce and protective, but her bland reaction stymied his argument before he opened his mouth. She knew when he realized she wasn’t going to blink.
He set his hand, palm down, on the tabletop. “Tobias was the first to offer me hope. And, though he had no specific advice to offer, he did point me toward Mama Lu.”
Her eyebrow rose. “Ah, and she had ideas and on friendly terms with the Kraken. Okay, we owe him. Any idea what he wants?”
“No, I don’t believe it will anything dire. His letter requested I use speed but not a dire emergency.”
She nodded. “I’ll see the house closed up and let Davis know we’re on a quest.”

Might as well use her sense of humor and pretend they were heading out on some heroic task.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

Well, I did…then I sent it to a very talented friend, who all but screamed at me – NO! NO! NO! Then she sent me her best idea. The final product came from Barbara Cool Lee! Thank God.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Don’t strive for perfection, strive for completion.

Excerpt:
Casually, Will laid an arm across the back of the bench. “The windows and doors won’t take very long. But if you’d like, we can talk about a few odd jobs. Like repairing this deck. I think the support beams are failing; it’s too spongy. I have the time on my schedule.”She turned her face toward his hand and inhaled the batch of pheromones he’d set down earlier. Her eyes closed slightly and a tremble ran through her body. The obvious desire for more flew through her. She took another deep breath. He set his drink cup down and turned to face her. When he lifted his hand slightly, she ran a tongue down it, and then flinched back. “Oh! I…uh…” The blush from the coffeehouse rose to a full bloom on her face. How charming!“Seems like a good thing to do…” Taking her hand in his, he raised it to his lips and ran his tongue down it, and then sucked several of her fingers into his mouth. Her eyes widened as she stared at him. “Oh, God. I...want…”“I like to follow my instincts, Sarah.” Will looked straight into her eyes. He licked at her fingertips before setting that hand at his bulging crotch. With a moan, her eyes lost focus as the pheromones took hold. Will kept still when she pushed off the bench, knelt on the deck, and fought to get his pants open. Her fervor impressed him. She lowered her mouth onto him and sucked like it was the first cock she’d ever touched.A smidge of guilt ran through him, but the glory of her mouth swept that away. If she hadn’t been inclined, it wouldn’t have worked.Though he wanted to linger over the encounter, it was best if he delivered this first dose of chemistry speedily. “Damn, that feels so good.” He stroked her hair, let his head drop back and surrendered. She swallowed most of his cum, save for the bit that dribbled down her chin. He smiled and lifted her, opening her shirt and spreading that bit down her cleavage, even painting her nipples with it. “Make sure he sucks them tonight,” he whispered.Sarah nodded, and he helped her back to the bench, securing her shirt before putting himself back together. He picked up his drink and let her return to herself. His chemistry would make sure she stayed calm. Her memory wasn’t going to argue with what just happened. It would just shuffle it around; probably decide nothing had occurred save a pleasant fantasy. As he expected, the lovely writer sat up straighter, picking up the conversation from where it left off. “Yeah, the deck. It is a bit spongy. I keep trying to talk Andrew into putting together a shed under there, with a door to the front and the back. And extend it.” She got up and pointed to the box below the deck, giving him a nice view of her ass. “That used to be where the twits before us kept their dogs.” It was as if the small interlude had never taken place. His imagination sped ahead, picturing her spreading those legs and inviting him to fuck her. Battling the image, he finished his cookies and then told her to check out the bedroom. “You can watch while I get the new window in.”Standing, she sedately followed him into the bedroom and lay down on the bed to observe him work. He stepped in and out of the room. One of the times he came back in, she’d slipped her hand under the waistband of the baggy jeans she was wearing and began masturbating. Will ignored her and kept talking about the window. When she climaxed, filling the room with her scent, he sat, pulling her hand free and cleaning it off. A small smile lit her face and then she drifted into a late afternoon nap. Her susceptibility boded well for his pursuit. He hoped Andrew was equally inclined. From impressions, he was nearly certain.
