Pendulums and Crystals- Guest Blog with Rayna Noire

For the Pagan Eyes series, I had to do some research. The series revolves around a Wiccan family, The Carpenters.  There are more than a few crystals in their home. Most of us see agate, quartz, tiger’s eye, and consider them attractive stones. A Hawaiian friend of mine told me most natives wouldn’t have crystals in their home because spirits hid in them. You never knew if it were a good or bad spirit. This makes sense in the fact that crystals are generally used to focus intent.

It also explains why people will wear specific stones in tiny wire cages around their neck or have wire wrapped necklaces. If the crystal holds power, it makes sense that drilling a hole in it for jewelry purposes would lessen its energy. People often use clear quartz for meditation. The stone can be nearby, worn, or held in the hand.

Most people have heard of worry stones. These smooth stones fit in a pocket and can be rubbed while thinking. There is no real magic, except the process of rubbing the stone usually calms a person and allows logical thought. Crystals and semi and precious stones have their own mythology. The Hope Diamond, a storied stone, is supposedly cursed. Does a bad spirit inhabit it, as my friend had suggested, or did greed cause the various incidents?

Crystals can be placed in grid arrangements to assist in such matters of career and romance. Interested in learning more? Try this website. The faceted clear quartz that hangs in my kitchen window turning sunlight into rainbows is my favorite use of a crystal.

If crystals could harbor spirits, then what about the pendulum? Often pendulum use is up there with the Ojiua board.  It takes skill and patience to work with a pendulum. Keep in mind; it can only answer yes and no questions.  It provides right now answers, however things do change.  The best way to test it is to ask questions you know the answer to.  Such as your birthday, your name, etc.  The pendulum will usually swing in a circle for yes and back and forth for no, but not always. I own a pendulum that does exactly the opposite.

Pendulums have to be cleared of past owner energies by sitting overnight in sea salt, moonlight, or bathed in sea water. The pendulum can also refuse to answer by gently vibrating. The skill comes in developing a question and holding your hand still.

Many people who use crystals and pendulums cleaned them to remove previous energy. They may also employ a simple ritual of spoken verse and incense to dedicate the item.

About the Author:

Rayna Noire is an author and a historian. The desire to uncover the truth behind the original fear of witches led her to the surprising discovery that people believed in magick in some form up to 150 years ago. A world that believed the impossible could happen and often did must have been amazing. With this in mind, Ms. Noire taps into this dimension, shapes it into stories about Pagan families who really aren’t that different from most people. They do go on the occasional time travel adventures and magick happens.
