Interview- Soul Warrior by Falguni Kothari

Do you have a specific writing style?

I suppose I do as many of my readers, especially the ones who know me personally, have told me they can “hear” me in my books. Evidently, I have an irreverent sense of humor that spills forth in the books as well.

Do you write in different genres?

I do. My first two traditionally published books are contemporary romances. My new release, Soul Warrior, is an urban fantasy based in Indian mythology. I have a women’s fiction novel getting all jazzed up for a May 2016 release. And my work-in-progress is a romantic suspense. Yup, looks like I’m all over the place, but in reality all my writing can be categorized as multicultural as I write about India or the Indian diaspora.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy, because I can go crazy with fantasy in a way I can’t in “real world” situations. I like the idea of a magic-infused world, and I love dealing with larger-than-life heroes, aliens, gods and demons.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

My title is one of the first things I brood over, along with getting to know my characters really really well. I generally have a pretty good idea of the title before I start writing. Luckily, both my traditionally published titles (It’s Your Move, Wordfreak! and Bootie and the Beast) were a hit with my publishers and no changes were made. I’ve only changed the title of Soul Warrior, which used to be Soul Catcher, after pitching it to an editor, who suggested I use Warrior and not Catcher as it sounded stronger.

What books are in your to read pile?

Let’s see. The top three are: Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith; Prince Lestat by Anne Rice; War of the Roses by Conn Iggulden.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

My Last Love Story is my women’s fiction novel scheduled for release in May 2016. It has a very different voice than my previous books—heavy and tragic, not fun and flippant—and I’m super excited to share it with my readers.

Currently, I’m working on a suspense novel based in the sex trade in Mumbai. It’s gritty and ugly and dark. The research I’m doing on this project is shocking, both in depth and quality. I hope I can do justice to this terrible and very real world of sex trafficking.

Do you have to travel much to do research for your books?

Not really. Google Earth and the Internet are great tools, besides libraries and my imagination. I find it challenging to write about places and things I have absolutely no idea about.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

This very lovely woman called Hang Le. Check out her website HERE.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Just write. Even if it’s crap. It’s practice. Then fiddle with it. And fiddle some more and some more. Somewhere along all the fiddling, you will get the hang of stringing the right words together, and your writing will morph into this pretty eloquent butterfly from a taciturn moth.

Thanks for having me on your blog, Roxanne. This was fun!
