COFFEE IS MURDER MCKINLEY MYSTERIES by Carolyn Arnold

Why I Chose to Write in the Mystery Genre

Strong characters, suspense, intrigue, murder, the pursuit of justice… I love all these aspects of the mystery genre. There’s something about the way mysteries are built upon a logical progression of thought—the interviewing of witnesses and suspects, following leads, waiting on forensic results.

Many writers will tell you that they plot their books—some in great detail—but that’s not how I work. In fact, if I try to even do a pared-down version of plotting, my creativity freezes. Instead, I sit down to write with the concept of a story. I’m aware of the killer’s motivation and the murder method they use, but even with that knowledge, I don’t always know who the killer is or how I’m going to unravel things. I work it out along with my characters, following one scene to the next to uncover the truth.

I also must say that I have a huge amount of respect for those who serve in law enforcement. They put their lives on the line every shift and do so, not just because it’s a job, but because they have a love for people and for helping their community. To be able to write in this genre, it enables me to pay my respects to them. My admiration for them is why I do my utmost to ensure the procedures in my books are accurate by researching and reaching out to contacts that I have who serve or who have served in law enforcement.

There’s also a fasciation that comes into play when it comes to forensics and the science of solving murder. New technology is coming out all the time and this allows me to keep on learning and to think of creative ways of working this into my stories.

I also love to read mysteries and watch crime dramas on TV so it only makes sense that I’d love to write in this genre as well.

BOOK OVERVIEW

A cup a day won’t kill you, but a few might.

Their first case as private investigators have Sean, Sara, and Jimmy neck-deep in coffee beans trying to find a killer. With their client certain that her mother was poisoned through her coffee of the month club, it has them setting out to Williamsburg, Virginia. But instead of approaching matters from the traditional standpoint, Sean and Sara brew a robust plot and stir Jimmy into the blend, all to get close to their top suspect and grind out the truth.

Going undercover at Tasty Beans, the coffee company, the three of them work to expose the culprit before anyone else dies.
