Interview - Emerge and Submerge Mer Chronicles Books 1 and 2 by Tobie Easton #mermaid #fantasy

Are you currently binge watching anything on Netflix, Hulu (or elsewhere)? What keeps you glued to the screen?

I am! I’m binge watching Supernatural right now.  So many people kept telling me I would like it because of how much I love Buffy, and it took me a few seasons to get into it, but now I’m totally hooked!  Recently, I’ve also really enjoyed You and Outlander (although I haven’t watched the most recent season of Outlander yet, so no spoilers, please).  I tend to fall for shows that offer me a glimpse into a new world of some sort and that have really strong character relationships—usually with a hefty dose of romance and magic.

Do you prefer movies or TV series?

I have favorite movies that I absolutely love, but overall, I prefer TV because television shows can take the time to explore so many facets of the characters and the world, not to mention they often have years to show gradual, long-term character development, which I find really fascinating.  I also love when television shows have details in previous seasons that turn out to be important much later; that’s definitely something I like to include in my book series, as well.

When it comes to reading do you prefer standalones or series?

I love the deep character development and extra layers of worldbuilding that a series can explore.  I get so connected to the characters in my favorite series.  Having said that, sometimes it’s really nice to read a standalone between series because it offers a different pace.
Do you prefer to start new book series when the first book is released or do you wait for several books in the series to be released so you can binge read?
I actually really like the anticipation that builds when you have to wait for the next book in a series to come out, so I don’t mind reading the first book and having to wait for subsequent books.  But if I don’t discover a series until the entire thing is out, I get really excited because then I can let myself fly through the first few books without having to worry that it will be over soon. So, there’re perks to both.

What are some of your hobbies, interests or guilty pleasures?

I love exploring new places, whether that’s travelling to a different country or checking out an area of my city I’ve never been before.  I find history really fascinating and I recently moved to the East Coast from California, so I’ve been doing different historical house tours, which are a lot of fun.  I also got a puppy this year, so long forest walks now top the list.

What's your guilty “nerd” pleasure?

Rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched my way through the series, but I get something new out of it each time. I’ve also recently gone down the Supernatural rabbit hole, as I mentioned, and I’m SO addicted.  Anything with magic as metaphor is totally my jam (and what I love writing the most in my own books).  I’ll also always have a deep love for fanfiction.

Have you ever peeked at the ending of a book?

Nope, I’ve never peeked at the ending.  My dad always skips to the last few pages of a book and reads them so he knows how a story ends, but for me, that would ruin it!  I like to be surprised, and when I do finally read that ending, I want to makes sure I’ve read everything leading up to it so that it’ll pack as much punch as possible.  I’m the world’s most impatient person, but with books, I’ll hang in there.

When it comes to your own writing are you a plotter or a pantser?

Definitely a plotter!  I always need to know what’s coming next or I tend to get stuck, so I work from a pretty detailed outline.  I tend to know all the plot points and twists ahead of time, and then the surprises I get while drafting center around how the characters get to those plot points emotionally and psychologically.  For me, having those different elements click into place while I’m writing is like magic!

So Lia has grown up in a secret community of land-dwelling Mer hidden among Malibu’s seaside mansions. Her biggest problems are surviving P.E. and keeping her feelings for Clay Ericson in check. Sure, he’s gorgeous in that cocky, leather jacket sort of way and makes her feel like there’s a school of fish swimming in her stomach, but getting involved with a human could put Lia's entire community at risk. So it’s for the best that he’s dating that new girl, right?

That is, until Lia finds out she isn't the only one at school keeping a potentially deadly secret. And this new girl? Her eyes are dead set on Clay, who doesn't realize the danger he's in. If Lia hopes to save him, she’ll have to get closer to Clay than ever. Lia’s parents would totally flip if they found out she was falling for a human boy, but the more time she spends with Clay, the harder it is for Lia to deny her feelings. After making a horrible mistake, Lia will risk everything to stop Clay from falling in love with the wrong girl.

Teaser Excerpt Book 1:

As I swim back up, I angle my face just right. When I hit the surface, I flick my head back so my hair flips in a perfect cascade, sparkling with thousands of water droplets that catch the sunlight at every angle. Maybe it’s unfair to use a classic Mermaid move against Clay.
