When unemployed accountant Miranda Weston takes a temp job at the hotel her best friend's family owns, she never dreams that her friend's globe-trotting brother will show up to celebrate the holiday and complicate her life. Peter Meredith broke Miranda's heart years ago and it's still a little tender at the broken places. She's not the lovestruck teenager she once was and he's changed too, and as guests come and go and the staff works hard to deliver Christmas magic, the season works a little magic on them as well.

But Miranda's complicated relationship with the man who may just be the love of her life is only one of the storylines playing out among the hotel staff and the guests gathered for the various "Christmas Experiences" offered at the Meredith Manor Hotel.

This is a short, cozy Christmas romance novel for fans of movies like Love, Actually and Valentine's Day and the books of Katie Flynn, Trisha Ashley, and Cathy Kelly.

Nemesis by Suzanne Madron

1. What inspired you to become an author?

It’s not something I really aspired to, it’s just something that happened and I rolled with it.

2. Do you write in different genres?

Yes. I write across the board in horror from gothic and vampire to post apocalyptic and on rare occasions, I write in zombie. I also write hardboiled occult noir mysteries that have a healthy dose of dark humor.

3. If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

I enjoy writing gothic and vampire horror quite a bit, and have loved writing hardboiled occult noir. It’s like being able to stretch your legs and walk around after a long trip in the car.

4. Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

It depends on the book. In the case of my current work, the title didn’t come until the book was in progress. A God in a House of Crosses has been a deviant from my usual way of working in that I’m writing down the scenes and assembling them all after the fact and out of sequence, where typically I will write in a much more linear fashion and see where it goes. This one is being elusive.

5. What books/authors have influenced your life?

Ann Radcliffe, the Bronte sisters, Stephen King, James Herbert, and Neil Gaiman

6. What book are you reading now?

Bob Meets Same by Jaime Johnesee, Violent Violet by Tara Vanflower, The Void Between Emotions by Sumiko Saulson, and The Maximilian Emancipation by Charles A. Conyers, Jr.

7. What books are in your to read pile?

The Mother of All Monsters by Paula D. Ashe, Night Hag by Brian Barr, Prey by Tim Majka, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte (aka Acton Bell).

8. What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I’m currently working on the fifth book in the Immortal War series, titled A God in a House of Crosses as well as working on the third book of the Metatron Mysteries titled Hand of Glory.

9. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Quite often I’ll have a scene playing over and over in my head for days and sometimes months before I can capture it onto paper. I write everything in a notebook, and for a particularly difficult scene, I’ll do sketches and storyboards of the scene before I finally grasp it from every angle enough to write it down. It’s like trying to catch a ghost sometimes.

Excerpt  Naked:

“Hey…” she sighed, taking the curve of his jaw in the palm of her hand and raising his eyes to meet hers. “I’m okay. You saved my life. For like… the millionth time.”  He didn’t move, so she didn’t pull away, finally able to observe him. His jaw was set, tense as he stared at her with those dusky, changeable eyes. But Phoe could feel a tremble there. A fear lurking underneath that she would never have expected a man like Cage to possess. “I’m fine.”
“And what in hell were you doing?” he said, snapping his head up to glare at her. “I told you to run away and you did exactly the opposite of what I said! You could have been killed! Or worse, bitten! You just… you don’t understand, Phoe. I’m supposed to protect you, and I didn’t protect you. I can’t lose another…”  His words trailed off. She could tell he wanted to say more but wouldn’t. She held his gaze, but he looked away, as if he were hiding some weakness he couldn’t stand for her to see. There was some trauma lurking there.
“What are you talking about?” she said. “Help me understand.”
“I can’t,” he said, pulling back and shaking his head as if to clear it. “I won’t.”
“But why…”
He rolled back on his heels and rose quickly, his shoulder brushing against the bedside table and nearly toppling the glass of tea, an uncharacteristically clumsy movement. “Just leave it alone, Phoe. My demons are my own.”  The weakness was gone, and now that hard-edged, barely contained anger returned. She knew if she pressed him that he would lash out. She was starting to understand, to be able to read his moods that had seemed so random and mysterious when they’d first met. There was a scab, healed over but still burning. “Rest up,” he said, turning to walk away. “We’ll leave at sunset. Addie has a car.”
Swallowing her nausea, she threw back the blanket and stumbled out of the bed toward him. “Wait… Cage…”
He stopped but didn’t turn.
“Look, I don’t know what’s happened to you in your past. But we all have demons. Some of us, more than most people. I get it.”  She lay a hand on his shoulder, feeling the tremble of muscles pulled tight. The sensation of gentle touch had evidently become a foreign concept, and his first reaction was to flee. His head turned, staring down at where the cool, pearlescent flesh of her fingertips rested against him. Such a profile, his eyes gazing downward and just the faint glisten of a single tear resting just under his eyelashes. Phoe’s heart broke for him. “You can trust me.”

“I do trust you, Phoe.”  She slid her arm along his shoulder, and he turned, enveloping her body in a gentle embrace. He brushed a hand over her brow, smoothing back the stray locks that fell around her face. Being so close to him, she felt small and skittish. If he loosened his grasp even just a little, she feared she would retreat. He took her hand, bringing it to his lips and then pressing her palm against his cheek. Instantly his body relaxed, as if her touch were some sort of calming drug. Phoebe could actually feel the tension melting from his embrace. His eyes were full of fire and his breathing labored. Phoe couldn’t believe that it was her doing this to him. That all of this was for her. “I don’t trust me,” he went on. She was mesmerized by the curves of his lips as he spoke and without even realizing, she’d moved closer. Only a breath between them, and then their lips touched. He kissed her, lightly at first then more insistent. Phoe was stiff, the sensation so unfamiliar as his sumptuous mouth caressed her lower lip, worrying it gently, teaching her what to do. She melted into his embrace, and he teased the crease of her mouth with the tip of his tongue, coaxing it open before taking possession. Cage stole her breath and then offered his own. His arms tightened around her waist as he pulled her in against him, letting his hands rest on her hips as their kiss went on and on. When he let her go, Phoe stumbled, holding her dizzy head. A fluttery feeling rose in the pit of her belly, and all she wanted to do was kiss him again.

Reluctant to become a spy again, Macijah "Cage" St. John's instincts prove correct when all hell breaks loose for him and his lady love, Phoebe Addison, who is also his new partner.

Book Description:

BACK...

Macijah "Cage" St. John' didn't want the spy life anymore. He would have been thrilled to spend every morning lying in the field behind Phoe's home in smalltown Louisiana watching the clouds roll by. But his Miss Addison wanted to spread her wings, literally. So Cage accepted a mission that teamed him up with his lady love. If only he had trusted her.

TO THE FUTURE

Everything about being a spy was a million times more exciting, and scarier, than the books she'd read in her former life as a librarian. When her first mission with Cage turned into a colossal clusterf*ck because he withheld information and kept secrets, Phoebe's world narrowed into a long tunnel of betrayal. Captured by space pirates and delivered to a horrible fate, she wished the last words between them had been of love, because she was certain she would never see Cage St. John again.

Excerpt Neo-Geisha:
Phoebe stood there letting the steaming water pour down over her body, wishing it would wash away the doubt. She didn’t hear the swish of the door opening so when Cage stepped into the shower behind her she screamed, coming at him with the tiny penknife she kept on hand at all times.
“Whoa,” he chuckled, grabbing her wrist. “Calm down. It’s me.” She held firm to the hilt of the knife for a few seconds before letting him slip it from her grasp. “You’re all right.”
“Am I?”
He nodded. “You’re always safe with me, love.”
“Is that a promise?” She met his gaze, searching for sincerity in it.
“Always.” He leaned in and pressed his lips to her forehead. “You really must stop taking weapons into the shower. That’s a nasty accident waiting to happen.”
All the pent-up emotion and stress from the last several weeks bubbled to the surface and she crumpled against him, her tears mixing with the falling water in a mixture of relief and fear, exhilaration and uncertainty. “There now, baby. You’re all right.” He wrapped his arms around her, brushing the matted tendrils away from her ear and kissing her lightly at the small hollow beneath. It made her feel small and protected. She craved the strength she felt in the hard muscles cording through his arms and chest.
“Is it like this every time?” she sniffled.
He chuckled. “You get used to it.”
“I didn’t think you were supposed to be afraid.”
“Where on earth would you get that idea?” he said. “Fear keeps us on our toes.”
“It didn’t do so well for me,” she replied, rubbing at her burning eyes. “I fucked up everything.”
“No you didn’t. It isn’t anyone’s fault. It just happened.”
“If you hadn’t been there…” she sniffled. “I’d… I…”
He took her chin between his fingertips and forced her head up. “You would have figured a way out. You’re smart and managed to keep your cool. As soon as the antidote took hold, you were able to shift. That confusion you created saved both our skins. So no more of this doubt, all right? You need to not worry so much,” he purred, nudging her back under the spray. The steam was a comfort, wrapping her in a blanket of humid warmth and she began to relax. “You’re so tense.” He turned her around brushing his fingertips along her spine.
“You know I’m a worrier,” she muttered.
“It’s a useless endeavor, I’m afraid.” His fingers came to rest at the swell of her ass and began tracing circles at the base of her spine. The callouses at the tips tickled at her skin and she shivered. He pulled her against him, so close that she could feel his lips fluttering against the cuff of her ear. “You have to let that go. Let me help you forget all about the wolves in the dark.”
She leaned back, luxuriating in the sensation of his hands slip-sliding over her body. Her skin was slick with the water and the remnants of expensive bath oil. “I think you’re trying to seduce me, Mr. St. John.”
“Of course I am,” he replied, pushing her hair away from her neck so that he could feather gentle kisses under her hairline. “Do you mind?”
“I’ll tell you when I mind,” she mumbled with a groan as he pinched her fleshy earlobe between his teeth. She reached back, tangling her fingers in the soft curls at the base of his skull. They were short, but long enough to wrap around a fingertip and tug lightly. She could feel his body so close behind her, hard against her softness. The contrast was so erotic that she was breathless even before his hands slid over her breasts.
“It isn’t fair,” she sighed as the blunt edge of his thumbnail slid over her nipple. “To let me get all clean only to make me dirty again.”

“I’ll gladly scrub anything you have, Miss Addison.”

SINS OF THE FLESH (Gluttony)
BY STACEY BROADBENT

It was a balmy Spring evening when I first discovered a taste for human flesh. It was a happy accident really. After having my heart broken one too many times, I'd abstained from any type of physical relationship with a man for years, so when one fell in my lap, it came as quite the surprise.

EXCERPT SINS OF THE FLESH:
Throwing caution to the wind, I slipped my feet into a pair of runners and walked down the road, telling myself it was to clear my mind. But really, I was on the prowl for fresh meat. Someone vulnerable—easy prey. I had to be smart about it; it was broad daylight after all.
Every person who walked past became a possible target. In my mind’s eye, I pictured a computer log for each one, listing their attributes. Having limited knowledge on the ins and outs of cannibalism, I had no idea what the perfect body type was for consumption. Would it matter if they were male or female? Was it better if they were lean and muscular, or was a layer of padding more flavourful? How was I to choose?
Turns out, I didn’t need to think about it at all. On my walk back home, I was knocked off my feet by a man out for a jog. He’d been too busy flicking through the playlist on his phone to see me, and by the time we’d both looked up, it was too late. We collided, my forehead into his chin and mouth. My hands automatically went up, pressing against his chest and sending us both bouncing off each other, landing on our behinds. Apologising profusely, he offered me his hand and pulled me to my feet. The impact had left a red egg on my head and skinned my palms raw. He, however, came across a little worse for wear, sporting a newly chipped tooth, and fat, bleeding lip. As soon as I got a whiff of the blood on his breath, I knew, he was the one.
I pointed to my house across the street, inviting him in to clean up while he called the emergency dentist. It was the least I could do.
Ushering him into the bathroom, I had him perch on the edge of the bath while I rummaged through the cabinet for the first aid kit. I needed to knock him out somehow. There was no way I could do this without it… unless…

A MILLION CLAY WOLVES (Greed)
BY AMBER K. BRYANT

Living in a squalid encampment in the shadows of a towering city, a young woman able to endow objects with magical powers struggles with her brother's growing determination to use her gift for his own selfish means.

EXCEPRT A MILLION CLAY WOLVES :
“Do you remember Jamey? Has a tattoo of a whale on his right arm, wears a red and white striped tank top—Sound familiar?”
Mora nodded. “He juggled knives and guns.”
“That’s right. Jamey is my boyfriend and we’re very happy, only… He has this crazy idea that he should give up the troop, join the army instead. He thinks it would provide a better life for us, but he’s wrong. This is the only life I want and I don’t want it to change. I need you to change his mind.”
“What?” She took a step away from Dare. “I… I can’t do that!”
“You don’t realize it, but you can. I saw it in you. The ability to endow magic. You just needed a jumpstart, and yesterday…” she pointed to the feather, “I gave it to you.”
Mora stared at the feather, still crumpled in her hand.
“Tell the feather that Jamey’s place is with me. In the troop. Tell the feather it needs to change Jamey’s mind. Go on.”
Mora lifted the feather halfway to her face, then paused. This would never work. Clearly circus life had taken its toll on Dare’s mental health. Or perhaps unstable people were attracted to the quirky life the troop seemed to lead. It was silly to give in to Dare’s demands. Then again, if she didn’t do it, perhaps Dare would become so angry, she’d bust out of her purple corset and become a rage-fueled She-Hulk. Perhaps the simplest way out of this situation was to tell the feather to become a mind-changer and then get the hell out of there.
“Fine, whatever.” She brought the feather to her lips and blew words into it. “Change Jamey’s mind. Make him stay. Oh!” She jumped as a tingling sensation moved through her body, from the soles of her feet up her legs and spine, then out to the tips of her fingers and into the feather. “What… what just happened.”
Dare’s face went back to its friendly older sister mode. “Exactly what I thought would. Thank you, Mora.” She took the feather back from Mora and pinned it into her dark, shimmering hair. “Wiser people than me would tell you to be careful with this gift of yours. Magic can be used for good or for evil. It doesn’t care which, most of the time.”
Confused, Mora toyed with a stray thread from the hem of her t-shirt. “But you’re… not telling me to be careful?”
Dare grasped Mora’s chin and tilted it so their eyes met. “We don’t find out what we’re capable of through advice.” She gave Mora’s face a tiny squeeze and then let her go. “Trial and error, darlin’."

DO NO HARM (Charity)
BY J.M. BUTLER

What if someone offered you exactly what you needed?

Ethics and vampirism hardly go together, and Aestan has concluded he is trapped between two bad situations. A chance meeting with his neighbor Summer changes everything as she offers the solution to his problems. He can have her blood. She's more than happy to give it if it keeps him from robbing blood banks or killing people. Though at first he is relieved, he soon realizes that even what is freely given may yet have consequences he does not desire.

EXCERPT DO NO HARM:
"Summer...I can't take your blood."
"Yes, you can. And if I were a stranger, you would. But we're friends."
"Friends?" Aestan couldn't suppress the sharp laugh. She had an oddly vague definition of friendship. Surely this was a joke. Summer finished the prep and took a deep breath.
"Yes, of course we are. Now...don't attack me or anything, okay?" She stuck the needle into her arm and balled her hand up before flexing her fingers and clenching again. "I can't let you have the blood we collected for the drive, but I can let you have some of mine. And then you know...we can start looking for some substitutes."
Words failed Aestan as he watched. A tantalizing scent rose from the glass, thick, slightly metallic. How could she be serious? Was he dreaming?

SEVEN DAYS (Humility)
BY LENORE CHEAIRS

A SINGLE MIND (Pride)
BY ALANA DELACROIX

Neil Clarins is a very important man with very important research.  He could save the world.  And he won't let anyone stand in his way.

EXCERPT A SINGLE MIND:
Neil straightens his back and keeps his hand away from his pocket. He’s right. His work is good and more than that, it’s needed. The entire world is about to go up in flames. The environment is a mess. People are fucking dying and what he has in his lab will save them. No way he’s going to let some petty bureaucrat like Mike Bell get in his way.
And if using his own brain as a testing ground is the way it has to be done, so be it.
Knowing he’ll be out for at least a day, Neil puts messages on all his corporate tethers: email, messenger. I’m sick, it says. Sorry, back soon.
He goes to his room and shaves off a small patch of hair. Underneath, the skin that’s never seen the sun is a sickly white-green. He swabs his temple with a topical anesthetic and sits on the bed for a long time, staring at the syringe with its small bolt gun mechanism, so like the one used to kill cattle. He has no idea if he’ll be able to walk after the injection and he doesn’t want to pass out in the bathroom. Too much risk of injury.
Neil takes a deep breath, then another. He thinks of the other scientific greats. Salk and the polio vaccine. Newton digging around his own eyeball with a bodkin.

HELL'S MATCH (Kindness)
BY ARIA PEYTON

In my world, too many people are lonely. So out of the kindness of my heart I help them. Those who want someone by their side forever get it. Only they never read the fine print and forever means just that.

EXCERPT HELL’S MATCH:
In a sinuous motion, Cheshire slides off the machine and backs away, book held out in front of her in a warding-off gesture. Anger fuels her when she speaks. “Am I being set up? Did you follow me here? What’s going on?”
I know better than to move, so I stay put, my body jerking with the motion of the tub beneath me. “No, of course—” The rest of the sentence dies at her raised brow and sceptical glare. “Yes. I followed you here.” I act all resigned to this fact but surge on when she tries to interrupt. “But only because Grandmother asked me to make contact with you, and when I got to your apartment, you were already on your way here. I was so intrigued by how you rebuffed her on the phone last night, I had to meet you myself.”
I may have just painted myself into a corner here as I watch the thoughts swirling in her head. I’ve given her too many inconsistencies to process and I know she’ll have a question for each one. But I already have the answer, and realistically, so does she.
“How did she know where I live? How the hell did she know what I look like? And how the fuck did you think this would look, stalking me into the damn laundromat?!” Her voice gets louder and squeakier with each word until others here start backing away. Soon the place is empty and Cheshire is alone here with me. The predator within can’t believe its luck, while the other side of me is fascinated that she didn’t run with everyone else.
“You spoke to her last night. What did she know about you then, huh?”
The glare eases a little, but she still keeps her distance. “Too much is what she knows. I’d love to know what little tricks she has up her frock sleeves to know so much without a word.”
“It’s just her ability. Some would call her clairvoyant or psychic.”
“Or just plain freaky,” she mutters under her breath.
“Or that.” I release a chuckle to lessen the tension hovering between us. Even though it’s refreshing to have a normal conversation with someone, the urgency to get her back to the office of ‘Madame’ still hangs over me. She’s the next match to be made and that contract needs to be signed.

About Aria Peyton:

I've been a covert operative in a foreign country, jumped out of helicopters for fun, and bungee jumped over the side of a Styrofoam factory into a vat of beans made for beanbags.

I can also leap Lego towers in a single bound, pack school lunches like a boss, and burn myself on any hot surface.

My multi-skilling is out of this world and I successfully masquerade as an average parent 24/7.

EVELYN
BY QT RUBY

Dr. Evers says the only way for Evelyn to be free is to remember her past, but is that really such a good idea?

EXCERPT EVELYN:
“Why am I restrained? There is no escape from this room.”
Dr. Evers releases a little sigh. “For my protection.”
“Against?”
“You.”
“Me? What could I do to you?” She waits to respond. I’m unsure if it’s because I have to remember like she said before, or she’s just a withholding bitch. “You will remember. So . . . please, continue.”
I sigh and growl a little. “My family . . . they loved me.”
Dr. Evers writes down my words.
“But they were afraid of me.”
“How do you know?”
“Because . . .” I pause to remember, to allow memories to solidify, sharpen. “Because I used to harm things.”

About Q.T. Ruby:

Q.T. Ruby, author of A Matter of Trust and its sequel A Moment of Truth, regularly escapes real-life to fall into make-believe worlds of her own design. Living in her native Connecticut with her two sweet kids, a wonderful husband, and a cat that doesn’t like to get picked up, she teaches tweens full time, hunkers down for cold winters, and tries to write like the wind in the summer.
