What Draws Us to the Vampire? Guest Blog with Serena Zane

What is it that draws us?

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always been fascinated by vampires. Not just any vampires mind you, I mean that ugly, skeletal vampire from Blood Stone that’s grayed and gaunt looking does not melt my butter. I’m talking about that sexy male vampire that calls to you in the night. The one with the long flowing hair, and penetrating eyes that you can’t seem to resist, what draws us to the idea that these creatures are dead sexy when we know that if they were real we’d be sucked dry and tossed to the side like so much garbage?
For me, it’s the idea of riding a line of danger that you know one day may snap. But when a man like Damon Blake, vampire, and all around totally hot guy in my upcoming book Snow Beast contains that power due to his humanity and love for a woman, I get to fall in love once again. Vampires throughout history run the gambit from the scary monster that will rip your heart out while drinking your blood, to the soul mate you can’t seem to deny who will protect you against any danger because he can’t live without you from Dracula to Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
In Snow Beast, you’ll meet both – the monster and the hero. In modern day Boston, Damon and Jared Blake, twin brothers and vampires, seek to keep the Code of the vampire world. It’s their duty to keep the peace and protect the secrets of their race. An evil force is killing young adults and leaving their bodies around the city, Damon and Jared must find it before their secrets are revealed. In the meantime, Damon comes up against Detective Nikki Adams who’s with the Boston Police Department. She her blood calls to him and her minds resistant to wiping her memories. Damon is faced with the decision of what to do with the feisty little brunette.
I enjoy writing both types of vampires, but the most enjoyable part is delving into the darkest parts of my imagination and putting to paper a character that encompasses all the traits of vampires through history that I personally have found to evoke both desire and danger. I hope you enjoy getting to know Damon and Jared Blake as much as I enjoy writing them.
