SEX and THE BASHFUL WRITER Guest blog by Bernadette Walsh

By Bernadette Walsh

Near the end of the edits of my first contemporary romance, GOLD COAST WIVES, my editor asked me whether I would consider adding a little more to my sole sex scene.
   “Ummm, no. Sorry,” I said.
“Can’t you just consider adding a little more?” she pleaded.
    “Nope. Can’t do it.”
And I really couldn’t. Just writing that half page of beyond vanilla sex scene almost killed me. Because GOLD COAST WIVES is a humorous romance I got away with it but if I wanted to consider myself a romance writer, I had to do something about my little problem.
So I downloaded about ten of the filthiest books I could find onto my kindle. Books that would put FIFTY SHADES to shame. Then I read them, one after the other, until the shock factor went away for me.
About a week later I started the first book of my paranormal trilogy, DEVIL’S MOUNTAIN. While this book is by no means erotica, it does have several hot sexy scenes that some might classify as a little kinky. And with each additional book in the series, I’ve gotten more comfortable with adding racy scenes.
While my dirty book reading binge certainly helped me get past the “ick” reaction I had when approaching a sex scene, I think the real reason I was finally able to write convincing sex scenes was because my heroines were completely unlike me. My heroine in GOLD COAST WIVES is a forty-something lawyer living in the suburbs. She is the one character I’ve written that is most like me, so writing a sex scene for her felt like walking through a shopping mall in my underwear. But the female characters in DEVIL’S MOUNTAIN are nothing like me. They are a family of Irish witches beholden to a sexy and dangerous mountain spirit, and let’s face it, we don’t have too many of those on Long Island.
By taking my characters out of my world, I was able to take myself out of the equation and leave my own personal inhibitions behind.  Just another reason why I love writing paranormal romance!

Mary’s daughter-in-law is now an unwitting pawn in the fickle spirit’s game. Mary must challenge her fate and that of all future Devlin women, but Slanaitheoir is the most powerful being in the land. And when part of her still yearns for His touch and love, how can she fight him and win?

About the Author

Long Bio
I have always been a bookworm and had always meant to write a novel “someday.” You know, when I won the lottery and could live in beach house and look out onto the water and feel inspired. Four years ago I decided to stop waiting for my winning lottery ticket and sat down and started writing in between work and family obligations, I piled the words on top of each other until they formed sentences, paragraphs, chapters and eventually a book.  My first book, a contemporary romance, Gold Coast Wives, was published in November 2011. The House on Prospect is my second novel. The first book of my paranormal trilogy, Devil’s Mountain -- Book One of the Devlin Legacy, was published in June 2012. While I’ve hopped around genres, all of my books to date have a common theme: strong women handling what life throws at them the best way they can.
