Interview with Dillan from Mistaken
Halfway
through writing Mistaken, I decided to sit down my two main characters for a
chat. Both declined to doing a joint interview, but I did get them to sit down
with me seperately and answer a few questions. Here is what transpired
between Dillan and myself.
J.A.H:
*sits down across from Dillan in her office chair* Good afternoon,
Dillan. Glad you could join me. I know you aren't much for making appearance
lately.
Dillan: *smirks, lounging back against the grey
sitting chair then peers over at me* You didn't exactly give me much of a
choice...
J.A.H:
Here...*I toss Dillan a bottle of Blue Moon and pop one open for myself*
Cheers...
Dillan: *holds up her own beer unenthusiastically
before taking a swig and hanging her legs off the side of the chair*
J.A.H:
So...I know its difficult for you to talk about Jamie, but could you share one
of your favorite memories of him with us?
Dillan: *Sighs and stares down at her drink for
a moment, a smile creeping over her lips* Well you already know about that. The
day we met, at Midfest.
J.A.H:
Yes, but we just know that you gave him a bloody nose in the mosh pit. Why
don't you tell us how you spent the rest of the day after that?
Dillan: *her smile widens as she stares out the
window in a dreamy haze* After I took him to the first aid tent, we hung back
in the crowd and listened to a few more sets. Midfest always has really great
bands coming through. Then we left the University and headed to Finley's Pub
and spent the night playing pool and...other things * there is a bit of a
mischievous gleam in her eyes as she flashes me a a crooked smile*
J.A.H:
What "other" things? * I raise an eyebrow at Dillan and lean forward.
I'm a sucker for gossip*
Dillan: Not that! We did make out like a couple
of crazed teenagers mind you, but Jamie was a complete gentleman.
J.A.H: Ah
the fun of young love, eh? *takes a sip of my own beer and smiles at Dillan*
Dillan: *Her own smile shrinks and she also
takes a sip* Yep... I miss those days.
J.A.H: I
know you rather not talk about what happened to Jamie, so we don't have to talk
about that...but how are you dealing with finding out about Trey?
Dillan: I honestly don't know what to think.
Why didn't Jamie ever mention him? I think he is up to something... *narrows
eyes at the author*
J.A.H:
This is your interview, NOT mine. *takes a sip of beer and stares back at
Dillan*
Dillan: *huffs in frustration and takes a
long draw from her bottle* Fine...Not like I won't find out eventually.
J.A.H: I
suppose that's true. Let's get back to the interview though, shall we?
Dillan: Fine *glowers at me and slouches back
against her chair*
J.A.H: I
noticed you and your friend Kay have been butting heads lately. Why do you keep
pushing her away? She seems to really care about you.
Dillan: Honestly, there is a lot of truth to her
concerns, but I can't just move on. I'm not ready to and she doesn't seem to
understand that. She is a good friend though.
J.A.H: So
you admit you have a drinking problem? *I cock an eyebrow at her. I know how to
push her buttons*
Dillan: Hey! I agreed to an interview, not an
A.A. meeting. *narrows her eyes at me and takes another sip to spite me*
J.A.H: *I
laugh, having sufficiently riled her up*
Dillan: You can be a real ass sometimes...
J.A.H: I
know. Sorry. *I simper, stifling a giggle* Speaking of coping mechanisms,
you like to listen to music when you are upset, right?
Dillan: Yes, Classic rock, a bit of Irish punk
rock, and some indie rock. What can I say? I am a beer-drinking, rock and roll
kind of girl. *winks, and lets out a cackle*
J.A.H:
Wasn't it Dropkick Murphys that was playing when you elbowed, Jamie in the
face?
Dillan: *giggles* Yep. They are quite
popular in Midtown.
J.A.H: I
have one final question...You are only what, 28? Do you think you will fall in
love again? I know you and Jamie were together a long time, but do you believe
there may be someone else out there for you?
Dillan: I know that I tend to come off as a
pessimist . Given my situation I would say that is understandable. But do I
believe that I'll find love again? I think so.
J.A.H:
*Smiles back at her* I think you will too.

Book Description:
One year ago, two bullets from a .45 caliber pistol ripped away any hopes Dillan had of a future with her fiancĂ©, Jamie. On the anniversary of Jamie’s death, the appearance of his estranged twin brother, Trey, leaves Dillan wondering what other secrets her prefect fiancĂ© was hiding. When Trey learns of his brother’s death, Dillan takes pity on him and gives him a place to stay.
Trey’s erratic behavior and a series of suspicious phone calls lead Dillan to believe that Trey knows more about the circumstances surrounding Jamie’s death than he’s letting on. With all leads exhausted and Jamie’s murderer still on the loose, Trey is Dillan’s last hope for finding the truth.
Sometimes the truth hurts… but in Dillan’s case it could kill her.
