Interview with Adam Sifre

What inspired you to become an author?

I’m very good at it and I love, love, LOVE knowing people are being entertained by something I did that does not involve a restraining order.

Do you write in different genres?

Right now I’m focusing on horror/comedy.  I’m toying with the idea of doing some erotica under a different name (“Jack Rabbit,” but don’t tell anyone) and I enjoy writing short stories in a variety of genres, including Romance and Sci-fi.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

I don’t think I have a favorite.   My goal is always to tell a good story.  The genre is secondary.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

“I’ve Been Deader” is a story told, in large part, from a zombie’s point of view.  Fred’s just a shambling corpse trying to find love, acceptance and brains in a brave new world.  When I first started writing about Fred, I pictured him as a zombie who is a bit world-weary.  The phrase “I’ve been better,” sprang to mind when I thought about how Fred was doing in my novel.  I mulled it over for a few hours and came up with “I’ve Seen Deader.”   When I went to type it, I accidently typed “Been,” instead of Seen.   It stuck.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Usually title first.  A lot of good stuff can flow from a title, in my opionion.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

The settings are largely based on me experience and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel like a zombie on some days.  There’s a chapter where a divorce attorney gets a little justice.  That’s part experience, part wishful thinking on my part.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I’m finishing up the prequel to “I’ve Been Deader,” titled “Take a Breather.”  I hope to have it done before Halloween, although I don’t know if it will be available by then.  My next project will be a docu-comedy called “My Life on Facebook: And Other Truths, Half-Truths and Outright Lies.”

Thanks!

Book Description:

Being a zombie is no picnic and it's one hell of a handicap in the romance department when you fall in love with a 'breather':

Aleta is a breather with short blonde hair and brown eyes - two of them! - and the whitest smile Fred has ever seen. Every day at a certain time she sits at her window, and every day he stands in the rubble across the street among a crowd of zombies waiting to break through the fence and eat her.

'You are beautiful, like an angel', he thinks, but all he can moan is, “Braaaiiinss."

Still, as zombies go, Fred's quite a catch. Underneath all the gangrene and rot, Fred is different. This girl will probably turn out to be yet another dead end, an infatuation, someone whose image he cannot get out of his mind and whose taste he cannot get out of his mouth, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

For breathers, it is always only a matter of time, however beautiful they are and whatever the government is assuring people.

Which makes Fred sad because he has a beautiful 11 year old son called Timmy, and Timmy may still be alive.
