Do you write in different genres?
I started out by writing fantasy. That’s what I read
the most growing up. It’s my “home” genre, where I feel the most at home. From
there I branched out to science fiction, and actually, my sci fi books have
been selling more than my fantasy ones. Now, I’m trying my hand at contemporary
romance, writing for Entangled Publishing’s Bliss line. We’ll see how that
goes!
If yes which is your favorite genre to write?
I love them all. Each one has its own advantages and
disadvantages. With fantasy, the sky is the limit, but with science fiction, I
try to root the science part at least a little bit in reality. My sci fi worlds
are derived from an apocalypse on Old Earth. With contemporary romance, it’s
like going naked without all the word building and setting- here the romance
takes the front stage.
How did you come up with the title for your latest
book?
Haven 6 is a planet that colonists have been
traveling for hundreds of years to reach. So, it’s their expectation that the
world will be a “safe haven”. Only, it’s everything but a haven when they get
there!
Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s
complete?
For Haven 6,
I had the title already chosen. But, Paradise
21 was originally called “Desert Nomad.” My critique partner said I had to
find a better name, and Paradise 21 was
born!
Is there a message in your novel that you want
readers to grasp?
Yes! Dare to dream, and follow your dreams. Also,
appreciate the Earth and the resources we have. Try to live efficiently and not
be wasteful.
Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a
true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?
Not in any of my space opera books. I just finished
a story about a flutist in an orchestra, and that is drawn from my own life
experiences. (But I can’t name names, here!”
What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?
Currently, I’m finishing a contemporary romance
about two scientists searching for the Loch Ness monster! Very exciting. I’ve
always been drawn to mythological creatures. In Love on Loch Ness, one scientist believes, and one does not.
Romance ensues, and you can guess what issues they have after that!
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Keep writing and don’t give up. It took me four
books to get an agent. What if I’d given up after the third one?

Book Description:
A product of an illegal pairing, Eridani is the only woman without a lifemate aboard the colonization ship, the Heritage, and she is determined her less than perfect DNA will not get in the way of finding love. As the ship nears it's final destination of Haven 6 after five hundred years of travel, images of the surface show evidence of intelligent life on a planet that's supposed to be uninhabited. Commander Grier assigns Eri to the exploratory team to spy on the alien society and return with information on how to defeat them.
When Eri's team lands, tribes of humans attack and Eri is saved by Striver, the descendant of a colonist and a pirate from Old Earth's colonization efforts in other parts of the galaxy. Striver helps Eri rescue her team and they are drawn to each other despite their different allegiances. While Striver battles with trusting Eri, Eri must decide whether to warn him and his people about the commander's intentions, or follow orders and complete her mission.

About the Author:
Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation-favorite character was Data by far-, and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.
Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be "A concert flutist" when she grew up. When she made that happen, she decided one career was not enough and embarked as a fantasy, sci fi author. Two careers seem to keep her busy. For now.
Her writings have appeared in Mindflights, Niteblade, Silver Blade, Emerald Tales, Hazard Cat, Moon Drenched Fables, A Fly in Amber, and Aurora Wolf. Her books are published by Entangled Publishing, Lyrical Press, and Gypsy Shadow Publishing. She recently signed her YA sci fi novel with Inkspell Publishing titled: Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed, which will release in October 2012.
