Interview with Courtney Renee

Do you write in different genres?

Yes.  I write in any and every genre.  I don’t much like to write in the non-fiction market, but I can and have.  It’s just not one of my favorites.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

I prefer to write in the paranormal/fantasy genre.  I find it fun to create stories without earthly boundaries.  That goes for my second favorite genre as well, which is the horror market.  I love to read and write a good scary story.  There is nothing like a set of chills on a dark night.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Neither really.  I start thinking about the title right off.  I work my way through the book and try out different ones as I go along and by the time it’s complete I have several possible titles.  As I am revising and editing I try them all out and see which one fits the best. Some titles are easier than others.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

My current release was somewhat an easy title as all the books in the series begin with the word “Shadow”.  Then since this book was the end of Sunny’s chapter.  The title almost had to be, Shadow’s End.  Yeah, I didn’t have to work very hard to come up with that one.

What book are you reading now?

Currently I am reading:  The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky.  This is now in theaters.  I like to read the books before seeing the movies.  The book is very entertaining and different in form.  It is written as if you are reading a diary or a packet of letters.  It’s fun.  I hope the movie is as well.

I am also reading Dark Storm, by Christine Feehan.  It is one of the Carpathian novels, which is a vampire romance series, to all those out there that have yet to pick up one of her books.  I love this author.  If you like romance and you like vampires, then give these a whirl.

What books are in your to read pile?

My TBR pile is HUGE.  There are so many books in it right now, it’s hard to see the books within the pile.  These are a few on the top of the pile:
Between the Line:  By Jodi Picult
No Easy Day: By Mark Owen
The Casual Vacancy: By the Author of the Harry Potter Series, JK. Rowling.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

My current WIP is an Angels and Demons story.  I found an old book of the bible that was removed for whatever religious reason they came up with at the time, titled: The Book of Enoch.  It was very interesting once I could get through the language barrier.  It got me thinking about angels and demons and just like that, taa daaa, story idea.  I don’t want to give to much away, as it is still a work in progress, but did you know angels are supposed to be all male?  Ever wonder why?

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I say this again and again, but my worst and hardest challenge as a writer is the grammar aspect.  Man that part of writing just sucks.  I am a firm believer that you can learn anything and do anything as long as you try and want to learn.  Well, I am proving myself wrong as I have book after book and lesson after lesson on grammar and spelling and punctuation and I still struggle daily with that part of writing.  I hate it.  Do I get better?  Some days.  Then others I feel like I am getting nowhere.  Grammar is my Achilles heel.  It’s killing me.

Do you have to travel much to do research for your books?

I wish!  I do a lot of research and travel my way through research books, but that is the extent of it.  Maybe one day I will have to write a book with a back drop of Ireland or Scotland and I will just HAVE to go over there to check it out.  So far though,  I haven’t been able to talk my husband into that.

No, I did not know angels were supposed to be men!! I think I disagree with God's reasoning for that, now matter what it is. But I can't wait to read what you come up with for the story!
