The most amusing comment I've ever heard relating to vampires had to do with them having sex. The comment was "If they're dead, it's scientifically impossible for a vampire to get a hard-on."
I remember bursting out laughing and thinking they were absolutely correct. The historic 'un-dead' vampire should not be able to perform and yet we have movies and literature that specifies otherwise.
Of course, my favorite vampire stories are those that have more of the evil brand of blood suckers, much like Anne Rice's Lestat. I like the complexity he brings to the page as well as the continuing conflict of good versus evil within him. But still, his heart doesn't beat and his flesh is cold to the touch-he's basically a walking, talking, reasoning and ruthless corpse.
So, when I decided to tackle the subject of vampires, I needed to think outside the box and create a brand new lore that, at least, would make more sense than the frozen-in-time corpse with fangs. Thus Damian was created. He's one of the shadow kin, frozen in time by a viral infection that requires blood to keep the host alive. His heart still beats, albeit at a much slower pace, and he still requires oxygen, but his body is in suspended animation because of a demon curse passed on through the blood of its hosts.
This virus has some benefits, like its healing effects and superhuman strength, which make it hard to kill a vampire, however, the virus does react catastrophically to the sun. So while they heal fast and are strong and quick, they do have vulnerabilities.
Damian isn't your average vampire, either. He has a very unique ability that no other vampire has and has been given a directive. He cannot spill innocent blood, or he will invoke the wrath of an archangel. But sometimes, even the righteous make a mistake.
