Thanks so much for hosting me! I'm tremendously excited to announce the
release of my first novel, Lucid, which is a literary fantasy aimed at teaching and
reinforcing empathy in young adults.
After working as a news broadcaster for over a decade, I really felt compelled
to use my writing as a way to reach out to young adults. While there are
overwhelmingly more positive stories involving teens in the news, it's the tough
ones that stick with you-think Columbine, Steubenville, all of the viral videos of
kids fighting one another, and the recent suspected involvement of a nineteen-
year-old in the Boston Marathon bombings.
Books that teach empathy are nothing new; Charlotte's Web, Of Mice and
Men, and To Kill a Mockingbird were some of my favorites as a child. But life
has changed very much since I was young. I wanted to write something with
the same kind of sentiment, but with a fresh twist that would appeal to a new
generation.
While graphic stories depicted in the news might suggest there is a decline in
empathy in today’s young adults, numerous medical studies point to a lack of
development in the part of the brain associated with empathy in teens. This same
part of the brain appears fully developed in adults. During this critical time of
their brain’s development, it would stand to reason that young adults should be
exposed to stories, films, and conversations that promote empathy as much as
possible.
Not only do I see Lucid as a tool in reinforcing empathy through the story
itself, but a percentage of every dollar I make will be donated to anti-bulling
organizations.
I hope you enjoy it!
Keep dreaming!
