1.
What inspired you to become an author?
I'm not entirely sure what made me think I could do this, but I know
that I grew up with books all around me. I started reading when I was three,
and never stopped. I started reading adult fantasy at eleven, stuff like Piers
Anthony and Terry Brooks, and something three years later, in my otherwise
crazy fourteen year old brain, said: give it a try! I did, and I haven't been
able to stop that either.
2.
Do you write in different genres?
Yes, I do, actually. This tour is for Adelheid, which is my
paranormal suspense, but I also write various romance stories in other genres:
post-apocalyptic erotic romance, sweet modern fairy tale romance, sci-fi
romance, historical... I am also working on an epic fantasy trilogy that I hope
I'll manage to finish someday!
3.
If yes which is your favorite genre to
write?
The paranormal, but I'm not sure if it's because of the genre or
because I really love the characters I've put in Adelheid. But I think that,
while I love all the stories I've tried to tell in my books, that Adelheid is
my first love.
4.
Is there a message in your novel that
you want readers to grasp?
You know, it hasn't been intentional, but I realize that I've kind
of created a parallel in my books to modern day life: a group of people
fighting for their right to be treated like everyone else. In my books, the
preternatural community is struggling to prove that they have the right to be
what they are and who they are, freely and safely. I guess I end up trying to
portray the message in my Adelheid stories that people are people, and have the
right to be, even if they sprout tiger fur every full moon...
5.
What books are in your to read pile?
So many! "Red Country" by Joe Abercrombie is at the top of
the pile, because he's one of my favorite authors. I've only delayed so I can
read his stuff in a less stressful phase of my life and really enjoy it, but
also cause I'm always scared of reading new books in series. Don't want to be
disappointed! I don't think I will be, though.
Let's see... "Journey to Altmortis" by Thaddeus White, and
the third Bakkian book by Jeffrey Poole. "Shadow Prowler" by Alexey
Pehov. "Luck of the Draw" by Piers Anthony. I'm way, way behind on
Terry Brooks' Shannara stuff. "Dinosaur Lake" by Kathryn Meyer
Griffith. "The Emperor's Edge" by Lindsey Buroker. "Full of
Heart" by J. R. Martinez. "Osiris" by E. J. Swift.
I'm sure there's a lot more that I'm forgetting. White, Poole,
Anthony, Brooks and Buroker I have all read before and liked a lot. Pehov and
Griffith will be a first, but they looked very interesting! Martinez is the
only non-fiction on there, but I find him such an inspiration and I loved him
on Dancing with the Stars. As for Swift, I actually knew the author prior to
being published. We've fallen out of touch, but I was thrilled to see the book
and can't wait to read it.
6.
Do you have to travel much to do
research for your books?
Sadly, no, but I wish that I did! I lived in Connecticut for most of
my life and had traveled all over New England during that time, which I could
bring to Adelheid, and now with a southern states spin-off of the series (as
I'm living in Alabama), maybe I can make an excuse to travel more to give to
that setting! Whenever I do travel, for whatever reason, I always remember it
and remember things I can use in a story.
7.
Who
designed the cover of your latest book?
I did, actually. I do all my own cover art, and cover art for some
fellow self-published authors. I enjoy it. The latest book is the fourth in the
series, and it was quite a challenge to create some unique facial scarring of
the main character.
The cover for this bundle was fun, too. I love telling people this,
but the image used on the cover didn't have a shirt on under the jacket. Since
Adelheid isn't total romance, I didn't want the cover giving the wrong idea, so
I had to put a shirt on the model! It came out rather well, if I do say so
myself.
8.
Do
you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this
book?
I don't have one that represents the whole book, since this one is
the three book bundle, but the song "What Have You Done?" by Within
Temptation has always stuck with me for Dakota's story, which is the second
book in the bundle ("When Forever Died"). The symphonic metal is a
merging of musical elements that on its own makes me think of my complicated
hunter, but the actual words find themselves very well applied to the story,
and the mixing of sorrow and anger really sets a great tone.
"Voracious," the third book in the bundle, was written
with a co-author (my husband) and he had a playlist for it, primarily of stuff
from the "Underworld" soundtrack and Evanescence.

Book Description:
Welcome to Adelheid, CT. Freak central. Unofficial capital of legal preternatural creatures in the Northeast. Focal point for anti-preternatural sentiments in the United States.
Who would ever guess that this otherwise sleepy New England town houses many of the most powerful beings known to exist?
* * *
In "Cameron's Law," meet Sadie Stanton, vampire poster girl for preternatural rights. She's just trying to start a business to help the community, but when vampires and werewolves start attacking each other, she gets thrust in the middle.
In "When Forever Died," Dakota is a rare shifter and hunter who has lived a long, hard life. But the past never sleeps and two simultaneous cases are going to test the personal defenses she's built over the centuries.
In "Voracious," the life D wants isn't what it seems. He certainly never planned on the fangs, but he's going to need a lot more than the pointy teeth to survive the first weeks of his new existence.
About the Author:
Mia Darien is an indie author of speculative fiction, and a New England Yankee transplanted into Alabama clay. No matter her geography, she continues to stubbornly and rebelliously live the life of her choosing along with her family and pets. She doesn't miss the snow.
