When
I’m Not Writing
A
lot of people comment on how full my schedule is. I have to admit, when I take
a good look at the different things I’m involved in, I sometimes wonder how I
manage. I have more going on than just about anyone I know, so my free time is
very important to me.
I
like to play with my daughters. We have two twin girls who arrived just before
Christmas last year. They light up my life and no matter how tired or down I’m
feeling, seeing them smile or hearing them laugh makes everything better.
Currently their favourite things are poking me in the face, waving, and trying
to make words happen.
Aside
from that, my wife and I enjoy our time on the couch in the evenings, watching
tv shows (Bones and Supernatural are our favourites) or movies. We got Netflix
last year, and that’s been great!
I’ve
been a gamer since I was a teenager. To this day, many of my best friends are
gamers and we still have a weekly game group that comes out to our house on
Thursday evenings for some tabletop roleplaying.
I
love to cook, too, and have people over for dinner. Life gets so hectic and
demanding, it’s important to take time to be with your friends. Doesn’t matter
how you do it, I honestly believe making time for your friends is one of the
most important things you can do.
The
funny thing is, I never consider writing to be work. I find I get stressed and
anxious if I take too much time away from it. In fact, the most common thing I
do when I’m not writing is to think about what I’m going to write next! I
remember once reading that most publishers wanted their authors to complete at
least one book a year. When I read that, I thought “Is that all?” I can’t
conceive of trying to get by with so little writing. One of my goals, besides
earning enough from my writing to quit my day-job, is to reach a point where I
have 4 books coming out every year. Next year I should manage 2, maybe 3 if I
hit all my targets, so I’m on my way!

Hope has returned to New York City. Nathan Shepherd leads a small band of dedicated fighters against the Council of Chains and the city's supernatural masters. But it's not enough. Because from the shadows of Nathan's former lives comes an old enemy, one who knows terrible secrets that Nathan has not yet remembered, secrets that could undo everything he has fought for.
Nathan's only chance to uncover the memories of his previous existence, and to conquer these new forces of evil, lies in Elena DeSantis. A woman he has fought beside in past lifetimes. A woman he has loved.
Together, Nathan and Elena are the only future the city has.
About the Author:
A child at heart who turned to writing and roleplaying games when there simply weren't enough action figures to play out the stories he wanted, Paul Anthony Shortt has been writing all his life. Growing up surrounded by music, film and theatre gave him a deep love of all forms of storytelling, each teaching him something new he could use. When not playing with the people in his head, he enjoys cooking and regular meet-ups with his gaming group.
Paul lives in Ireland with his wife Jen and their dogs, Pepper and Jasper. Their first child, Conor William Henry Shortt, was born on July 11th, 2011. He passed away three days later, but brought love and joy into their lives and those of their friends. The following year, Jen gave birth to twins, Amy and Erica.
Paul's first novel, Locked Within, was released on November 6th, 2012, by WiDo Publishing. Silent Oath is the second book in this urban fantasy trilogy.
