Who’s in charge of the story?
Once upon a time, I wrote a book where the heroine was raped
by the son of a “friend of the family”. It was a terrible scene and I cried
while I wrote it. When my mother read the book, she was outraged.
“How could you do that?” she wanted to know.
I told her, “I didn’t do it. It’s just what happened.”
“What do you mean? You wrote the book.”
I explained. “Yes, but I just set the plot, which comes to
me from I don’t know where, create the characters and then they tell me the
story.”
My mother looked at me as if I’d lost my mind. I know she
thought I was nuts. I believe that over time she has come to understand. At
least I hope so.
So, who’s in charge of the story? It’s not me. I sometimes
wish it was, but those characters will not do anything that is not in their
makeup to do. I can’t make them and if I did, you wouldn’t believe it anyway.
Every now and then, I’ll be reading a book and the hero or heroine will do
something that seems so out of character. I always think to myself, did someone
influence the writer? Did her agent tell her she needed to cut a big chunk of
story and in order to make the book work she added the piece I didn’t like or
believe?
I gave a workshop not too long ago about adding conflict to
a book. I taught how to storyboard your book on a whiteboard. So, I do outline
to some degree, though sometimes the characters still go off the reservation
and do what’s in their nature to do. During the workshop, I put different
shapes on the whiteboard to indicate external and internal conflict. I call the
external conflict “mean author”. Those are the things that the author throws at
the characters, mean things that add interest and set the stage for what
happens next.
Everything in the other shapes (internal conflict) is what
happens in response and is out of my control.
Kane’s Bounty came to me as an image of Kane in the bar in
Savannah watching Lena his mark interact with a man of questionable morals. I
also knew that a second bounty hunter was going to rush in and create a mob
scene in the bar. I didn’t know that Kane would swoop in, toss Lena over his
shoulder and carry her halfway across the city like a sack of potatoes.
I had no idea how Lena would react or that Kane’s nature
would compel him to do everything in his power to keep her safe. I thought he
would follow his cannon of rules. I didn’t know that he had an even deeper set
of rules governing right and wrong. I just love that about him. J
You never know how a character is going to react until you
put them in the situation. I think this is true in life as well as literature.
Thank you, Roxanne for inviting me to be your guest here
today. I’ve had a great time sharing a little bit about my writing process with
you and your readers.
