Do
you have a specific writing style?
I love writing dialogue, especially sassy,
rapid-fire exchanges between my hero and heroine, and I find humor in a lot of
situations which tends to come through in my writing. I guess my writing style
would be dialogue heavy, a lot of humor, and my stories are generally very fast
moving and succinct.
Do
you write in different genres?
Yes, I also write crime, but I haven’t published any
yet J
If
yes which is your favorite genre to write?
I love writing both. Romance is very satisfying
because I love getting into my characters’ heads, knowing what makes them tick,
and finding a way to show how they are in the inside by the way they act. I
also love writing twisty, complicated plots which are perfect in the crime
genre.
How
did you come up with the title for your latest book?
The title of my latest book, Under the Hood, is also
the name of the garage owned by Alice, my heroine. She’s a mechanic, so spends
quite a lot of time under the hood, so it was a natural choice for the title.
Do
you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?
Always first. In fact, I can’t start a book without
the perfect title.
Is
there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
The three women owners of Under the Hood are
confident women working in a male-dominated profession. I guess the message
would be that gender should never be a barrier to what you want to do in life.
Also, friends will support you no matter what choices you make. All your dreams
are within reach, with friends to help on the way.
Is
the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone
you know, or events in your own life?
I’ve always thought that if there was a garage
locally that was run by women I’d definitely use it, because I always feel that
there’s a presumption that I don’t know what I’m talking about when it comes to
cars, because I’m a woman. So the idea of the book was based on something I’d
like to have in my own town, in my own life!
What
books/authors have influenced your life?
I love Charlaine Harris’s ‘Grave’ series of books,
and JD Robb. I also love the writing style of Jeffery Deaver, Lee Child and
Patricia D Cornwell. I’ve been greatly
inspired by all these authors ability to convey strong emotion very
economically on the page, to really build a sense of place and atmosphere. I
also loved the first two of Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones books because they
were so funny! I also love Andrea Camilleri’s Montalbano series and Sue
Grafton’s female private eye, Kinsey Millhone.
What
book are you reading now?
I’m reading Never Go Back, by Lee Child. It’s the 18th
Jack Reacher book, and I love Reacher, (the original, book based version. The
Tom Cruise version? Not so much!)
Do
you have any advice for other writers?
Just keep writing. Nora Roberts said in an interview
: I’ll vomit out the first draft: bare-bones,
get-the-story-down. I don’t edit and fiddle as I go, because I don’t know
what’s going to happen next.
I think this is excellent advice. Get the story
down. Fix it afterwards.

Book Description:
When sexy mechanic Alice Starr
mistakenly believes attorney Mark Jameson needs her help, he discovers he likes
being rescued for a change. Smitten by her confidence, he hides his expertise
so he has an excuse to see her again.
Starting their new all-female
garage, Under the Hood, is keeping Alice and her friends busy. She doesn't have
time for a man. But with one kiss, she and Mark have advanced into water so
deep she's in danger of drowning. So why hasn't he called?
Mark wants to tell Alice the
truth so they can pursue a relationship. But he's got even bigger problems at
his office when his bitter aunt threatens Alice’s livelihood. He needs a plan,
fast, or else Under the Hood and his chances with Alice could both be ruined.
Sally Clements writes fun, sexy and real
contemporary romance, partnering hot heroes with heroines who know what they
want, and go for it!
Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s
published six more, and is a full-time author. Sally lives in the Irish
