Interview with Renee Vincent: UNFORGETTABLE HEROES Blitz

Do you write in different genres?

My first love has always been reading historical romances. Consequently, they are what I LOVE to write. I’ve dabbled in humorous Chick Lit writing as Grace Lee Rose, but have always wanted to write a Young Adult historical fantasy. I have a premise, a title, a cover, and a different pen name for this upcoming project…I just have to find the time to write it. I’m hoping to finish it sometime in 2015.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

Silent Partner, one of the eight books that’s included in the UNFORGETTABLE HEROES Boxed Set, is a “play on words” kind of title. The heroine, Chloe, is a starving artist and the hero, Grayson, is a successful dance club owner. Both are searching for something life-altering to save their businesses and unbeknownst to either party, each can provide for what the other needs. Someone fills the role of a silent partner and it may not be who you’d expect.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Most often, I write the book and the title comes thereafter. But as crazy as this sounds, there have been times where I’ve come upon a random cover first and the story unfolded later in my head. For instance, take my upcoming release: Where The Wind Blows.

I saw the cover art first at Carey Abbott’s website, bought it, and had Calliope Designs finish the details on it. After seeing the completed cover, inspiration took over and I came up with this premise:

She blew through his perfect world like a gale force wind.

He took her heart by storm.

Dropping everything and leaving her idiot boyfriend behind, Carly Fuller heads to the country to start her life anew, never expecting the dolt to turn possessive and follow her. On the run and in fear for her life, she turns down a long blacktop drive with beautiful black-board fencing. Hoping the wealthy, respectable owners will help her get to the authorities, she finds that the gorgeous horse farm belongs to one hunky carpenter who has more than enough muscle to safeguard her.

While his childhood friends have eagerly left the country, Jeremiah Kessler remains as far away as possible from the busy city life. Content to live in the quiet, rolling hills of Kentucky, his perfect world is torn asunder the day Ms. Windy City Whirlwind blows up onto his doorstep looking for sanctuary from her volatile ex-boyfriend.

As every goodhearted country boy had been taught, he doesn’t turn his back on a woman in need—especially when a funneling tornado is threatening to rip through his town. As the two take shelter in his basement, Jeremiah learns that some good can actually come from the city, in particular the feisty little windstorm under his roof.

What books/authors have influenced your life?

I’ve always enjoyed the historical romances of Nora Roberts, Johanna Lindsey, Amanda Quick, and Catherine Coulter. In recent years, I’ve personally met and fallen in love with the writings of Kimberly Killion, Margaret Ethridge, Monica Burns, and Donna MacMeans. But one book that has influenced me more than any other book is Wolfskin by Juliet Marillier. If you enjoy Vikings and their culture, then I highly recommend this historical fantasy novel.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Donna MacMeans, though she may not really know it. I first met her at a Barnes & Noble book signing and she stood out amongst all the other authors because she came dressed in character, complete with hats, feathers, and bustiers. I remember asking her some advice about my finished historical and she took the time to chat with me right then and there. She could have brushed me off as it was a busy time for her with local fans waiting to have their book signed. But no. She sat there and talked to me as if I were the only person in the room.

Since then, I’ve seen Donna many times through the years, but the one day that will stand out in my mind as a pivotal moment in my author career, was the first Lori Foster’s conference I’d attended. At this event, I could finally boast being published and Donna MacMeans came to me, calling me by name, and hugged me. I couldn’t believe she remembered who I was. It’s a day I’ll never forget.

What book are you reading now?

Lots of Kristan Higgins books. She writes first person POV humorous romance and I’m loving her light-hearted style of writing. Hence, the reason I branched off from my deep, plot-twisting romances under Renee Vincent and started penning ChickLit novellas under Gracie Lee Rose.

What books are in your to read pile?

I’m very excited to get back to reading historical romances again. Many are waiting for me on my kindle: Jianne Carlo’s Viking books, Gina Conkle’s Norse Jewel, Sharon Page’s regency books, etc.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Dream as big as you want, but set goals that are realistically attainable. Use each accomplished goal as a stepping stone toward that big dream.
And another would be: WRITE that next book! Nothing will help you more as a writer than having a backlist.

Do you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this book?

There are several songs that are actually mentioned in the book, given Grayson is a Latin-style dancer: Oye El Boom by David Bisbol and Tonight (I’m Loving You) by Enrique Iglecias.

About the Author Renee Vincent:

I'm an author, a dreamer, a horse owner, and a medieval history buff. I'm a fun-loving, mildly eccentric, free-spirited kind of girl with a passion for books. From an early age, I've always had scenes playing out in my head. Whether it was a story with a moral or a tale with a twist, those ideas have never let me sleep until I wrote them out. And considering I have an eclectic ensemble of stories swarming in my brain at any given time, I write under a couple pen names to accommodate the various genre categories.
