Interview and Giveaway with Anyta Sunday

Do you write in different genres?

Yes, I do. I write YA paranormal romance, New Adult urban fantasy, and then I write contemporary gay romance. Under different pseudonyms, I write gay erotic fairy tales, and I’m currently working on a children’s chapter book.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

No fair! That’s too tough. I think the reason I write a broad range is because so much interests me and I like to keep things interesting. The different genres offer different challenges, and I enjoy them all! Equally.

What books are in your to read pile?

So, I just checked on Goodreads on my to-read shelf and I have 256 books waiting for me. The thing is, I am adding to the list faster than I can possibly read. :/ I try to read between 50 – 100 books a year, and by that math, it’ll take me a while to get through those books! But, some examples of ones I really want to read very soon:

Faefever, Karen Marie Moning (I’m at book II currently)

The Scorpio Races, Maggie Stiefvater

Perfect Scoundrels, Ally Carter

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Rewriting is hard. Cutting out scenes that you loved because they didn’t work for the story. Of course, doing it makes things better. But yeah, tough.

Do you have to travel much to do research for your books?

This is an interesting question, because I am a New Zealander who has set the Guardians trilogy in the States. Sometimes my English is very close to British English and that shows through in the writing. However, I lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for two years, which I counted as research, and I often went to DC to visit a writing friend of mine who lived there. I also have American beta readers that help with language/setting too.

After Phoenixed, I am planning to co-write a gay historical romance based in Ireland, and I hope to travel there again to do some research. (Nice excuse to travel, eh!)

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

The talented Caroline Wimmer. She designed all the Guardian of the Angels covers and my latest gay romance Liam Davis & The Raven! She’s very talented, and I’m glad to have her on my team.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Persistence. Yeah, just keep at it. Don’t wait for inspiration to come to you, go to it. Make it happen.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

Phoenixed! Lol. Yes, I’m working on the final installment to the Guardian of the Angels trilogy.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Here is a never-before-read sneak peek at the opening of Pheonixed (Coming 2014). Please keep in mind that this is an extract from an unedited first draft!

* * *
There are a thousand shades of gray between right and wrong, and I was somewhere in the middle of them.

“They told us not to leave the motel premises without them,” Marcus said, shaking his head as he threw the keys to Dimitri’s Porsche over the hood.

“They always tell us that.” I opened the car door and slipped into the driver’s seat.

The leather seats were smooth and the hightailing out of the motel parking lot was even smoother.

“But tonight . . . and the meeting.”

The meeting to discuss the legitimacy of the prophecies to death, to question where the keys to the underworld were, to decide the fate of a fellow guardian . . .

“Exactly,” I said. “The meeting.”

“Right.” Leather creaked. “Sixty-nine, here we come.”

I raised a brow. “What type of mission do you think we’re on, exactly?”

A snort. “I’ve been counting.”

“How many un-phoenixed guardians we’ve saved?”

“No. How many times you’ve almost killed me saving one.”

Yikes. So many times? I thought I was getting better controlling my powers around him.
I glanced over and gave him a meek smile. A slither of moonlight haloed his bleached hair and shone against Maddy’s locket that peeked out behind his white shirt. He lounged confidently in the passenger seat, drumming his fingers on the armrest. The leather seats either side of him pinched where he rested, wrinkles spanning out like wings.

He looked ethereal. Looked like he could have transcended from the heavenly Eirene.

I swallowed and focused on the dark gray road ahead. Wasn’t that a hard study of contradictions? Marcus was as far from Eirene as he could get. Thanks to the Arae demon that had killed Maddy, Marcus was partially tethered to Ache, and . . .

My hands grew clammy against the grainy rubber steering wheel. There was something else, too. After nearly being annihilated by Furie and her minions last winter, I’d made it my mission to learn everything I could about Ache and the Derinyes Queens. And what I learned . . .

I glanced at Marcus again. What I’d learned and hadn’t ever brought up was that his soul was bound to Ache. When he died, the Derinyes got him.

Marcus shifted sharply as if he’d read my mind, but then the radio burst to life and he hummed along with it.

We drove into Foxtin’s city center. Past the local square hosting the annual week-long art market, past a few buildings that looked like they should have stayed in the sixties, and past a steakhouse that seemed oddly familiar . . . I looked at Marcus again.

“What’s with all the staring? If I didn’t know better”—He waved a hand toward himself, a grin twitching at his lip—“I’d think you were checking this out.”

“Wouldn’t be thinking straight if I was.”

“Actually, you would be—”

With a sharp jerk of the wheel, I narrowly avoided turning off to my home—My mom and dad and Jeffrey home.

I reeved the car, and bumped down a pothole-filled street. Marcus cringed when a spray of stones dinged against the car.

“Does Dimitri know you borrow his car on a relatively regular basis?” I asked, even though I was fairly sure the answer was a hard and fast no.

A shrug met my question, followed by an uncomfortable silence. And then he banged his head against the headrest, his gaze darkening as he stared out the front window. “Not like he can say anything about it, can he?”

“It’s been months,” I said carefully. Four to be exact. “Maybe you two should get past this.” Though really, who was I to speak?

“You’re one to speak,” Marcus drawled. “You practically flew out of there when you heard Queen Meyer and her cohorts were coming for the meeting.”

“Yes, well,” I said, my foot pressing down on the gas a little more than it should. “She’s got this whole Queen of Hearts thing going on, doesn’t she? I’m pretty sure if I spent any more time around her, heads would start rolling. Mine the first among them.”

Marcus laid an arm on my shoulder and squeezed. “You and I both know that’s not what had you streaking out of there like . . . like . . .”

“Lightning?” I suggested. Seemed to be the perfect analogy since that’s what I actually did. Bolted lightning and controlled the skies and all that.

“Yeah. Come on. When was the last time you saw him?”

“Him who?”

“You know.”

I knew.
