Interview and Giveaway with Danica Winters

What inspired you to become an author?

When I was a teen I loved to write, but was put down by an English teacher whose comments made me shift my attention away from writing. After a bout of cancer at eighteen, I reevaluated my life and what I truly loved. After a great deal of soul-searching, I decided I was going to do what made me happy and finally, when I was about twenty-four, I made the journey into writing professionally. It has been a rocky road at times, especially when I was just starting, but now, a few years later, I’m so glad that I went through the struggles and hardships I was forced to face. They made me the writer I am today. J

Do you have a specific writing style?

Many of my fans say that I write like Janet Evanovich (thank you BTW—what a compliment). I write fast plots, quirky characters, and intricate story lines. I thrive on writing books that are completely unique, but something that readers love.

Do you write in different genres?

I write shorter novellas and short stories in romantic suspense. In the future, we may see a novel length romantic suspense.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Often the title I come up with is changed by the publisher. Over the years, I have come to accept this as part of the process. In the case of Savannah Sacrifice, it started out as Operation Sacrifice, but when I was done writing I felt it needed to be changed.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

In every single one of my stories I always come back to one theme, a theme that has dramatically affected my life, and that is the belief in hope. Without hope nothing will ever change. Hope unites us all and keeps us moving forward.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? Casey Dawes, B.J. Daniels, and Kat Martin have been major influences in my life. I’m lucky to live in Montana and have them as chapter mates.

What book are you reading now?

I’m reading Brenda Novak’s White Heat.

What books are in your to read pile?

Do you have an hour?

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

There are many projects in the works. There will be more books/book in the Nymph Series and I’m also working on a new series called The Irish Traveller Series. I’m pretty excited about my upcoming books!

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I’m a full-time mom of small children, and a full-time writer. I also own a new company. So my hours are packed with meetings, peanut butter and jelly, and ink stains. I’m busy, but I have to admit that I love the energy that surrounds me.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I have a love/hate relationship with Jodi Picoult. If you’ve read her books you will understand exactly what I mean. I love her writing and her work, but I always end up throwing the book.

Do you have to travel much to do research for your books?

I don’t do a lot of travel for my books, but I do a TON of research. I’m working on a new book about Fire Fighters (it’s tough work to stare at them all day)! J
I would say that half of my hours in a book are spent in research and story development.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Have a thick skin and try to understand the difference between a critic and a critique. If/when you get negative feedback, turn it to your advantage. It’s a hard skill to have, accepting criticism with a smile, but the sooner you are able to do this, the better off you will be.

More importantly, remember to have fun.

Thank you, Roxanne, for all your hard work and for having me on your blog. I love having you as part of my team! :-)

Thanks Danica, I love being part of your team :-)

Being a demi-god has its privileges. For the young nymph, Starling Jackson, it means the gift of seduction and more than that—near immortality. Yet, when her life is filled with spirits, immortality may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

With the help of her bodyguard, Jasper Gray, and secret books left to her by her late-mother’s friend, she may have found the answer to all of her problems.  First, they must find a way to locate the books in their enemy’s hotbed all while staying safe and most importantly—without falling in love.

In the battles between the head and the heart and enemies and friends, tough decisions must be faced—and sacrifices made.
