Guest Blog and Giveaway Everything For Love by Marilyn Vix

I did a lot of traveling to visit the settings for Everything For Love. Some of my travels took
me to Paris, several times. I guess that’s why I picked it as the starting setting in Everything For Love. I really enjoyed learning about the impressionists, especially Henri Toulouse Lautrec. I did a watercolor class that was taught abroad as a vacation option in Toulouse. I got to see the museum there dedicated to his artwork. I also loved exploring Montmartre when I lived in Paris in the early 90s. I loved to walk the streets and imagine what it would be like to see the artists, talk with Hemingway or Lautrec in one of the many cafes.

But my travels didn’t stop there. Besides using the setting of places I’d visited and loved for this book, I also needed some settings near London that would work for the plot. I’ve been to London several times over, but used pictures from 1914 or near that date to describe the areas. But it did help to actually go and visit them. There are some places of London that haven’t changed. The feeling of the cold, fog of the river, the excitement of being in such a famous city is more realistic if you can experience them yourself and describe them later.

For places that Deidre needed to visit or escape to during some of the book, I had to research first on line. That’s when I found Amersham. The area outside London is the right distance for the Vorticists to have a private meeting away from the city, and it was a tourist destination. I went their while visiting my in-laws during the Christmas of 2015 while I was still writing the story.

Roald Dahl wrote his famous books in the area, and a museum is established in the town near by. I stayed at a five hundred year old inn at the end of the street that Deidre and Max walk down. I explored the train station that they would take from London. Sometimes it helps to wonder the same footsteps that your characters would have to take. You can be their avatar.

I explored the Amersham Market Hall that is at the center of town. It’s buildings like this that would travel through time as much as a timeanaut, and be an anchor for them. It’s several hundred years old. The nice thing about doing all this exploration is it was like a vacation in itself. I learned more than I could ever use in my book, like about the estate house that could lend itself to be John Spencer’s home. The whole area was the perfect setting. It is one of the things I enjoy about writing, the travel to explore the setting for my characters.

Below is a video link to Researching Everything For Love (On Youtube): Things you see in the video, Amersham and the Town Hall, the nook that Deidre hides in at the end of the book, the estate that inspires John Spencer’s estate, and some of Amersham and London. I hope it gives you an idea of what it was like to research Everything For Love.

Enjoy, until next time,

- Marilyn Vix.

Excerpt: Chapter 1

Deidre climbed the stairs to his loft and rang the bell. The door slid open. Inside, he was waiting.
Strong, young, and handsome, he had brown hair that flowed down to his shoulders that she loved to flip in her fingers. His tan coat was covered with flecks of paint, but was set off with a large, dark blue cravat. He always let his work spoil his clothes. It was his charm. He glowed with a smile when he met her eyes.
“Deidre, my love. What brings you to Montmartre today?”
“You,” she answered as she walked through the doorway, pushing him back toward the bed.
“You are my little vixen,” he said as he removed his cravat with a flick of his wrist.
“Do me a favor? Hurry.”
He grabbed her around the waist, but held up a hand to stall their descent onto the bed. An expert at releasing a woman from frivolous garments, he expertly undid each of her many pearl buttons, slowly, teasing her, as her silk dress began to fall free. One tantalizing kiss followed another as he progressed down her until the dress fell to the floor with a chorus of burgundy silk ruffles. After an admiring gaze, he swung her onto the bed.
She turned to see Philippe looking at her, his eyes focused on her bosoms as they peeked out from the top of the tight corset, swelling with each breath she took. Though she wanted to be free from its confines, she enjoyed teasing him with anticipation. She rolled onto her side, her hair starting to unravel from her pins, watching his reaction as he watched her. She smiled as he descended upon her. “What are you looking at?”
“Something I would love to paint.”
He lowered himself down and kissed her gently with firm lips. She reached for his jaw line, caressing it. Moving his hand down her leg, he slipped his fingers into the top of one stocking and then the other, slowly rolling them down her legs, kissing the insides of her warm thighs as he went. She reached down and pulled on his hair, encouraging him to return. As he rose, he began to unlace her corset, freeing her breasts, exposing her pert nipples. She caressed the front of his chest, feeling the definition, the flatness of his belly. She stopped at his waist, looking up with a smile.
“Should I continue?” she whispered.
