On the Rox- 2019 A Journey to Wellness

2016 broke me. My health was a mess and the doctors kept giving me medications that made it worse.

2017 almost killed me. Depression, due to my poor health and emotionally traumatic events in my life, left me dead inside trying to hide from the pain.

2018, I performed a healing and cleansing ritual and it was like the clouds parted in my mind and I could think clearly again. My creativity was back in full force. I started a new blog, started two books, worked on some others and created tons of art. It was amazing.

But my health was still holding me back.

So I decided 2019 was going to be my year to get healthy.

My husband and I started the Keto Diet on January 1st. And it is hard. It is so hard. You have to read every single label. It is insane what they put sugar and high fructose corn syrup in. We make most of our own food. Coffee cream, fat bombs, sauces...I even make my own carbonated drink with a soda stream (water, lemons, a little stevia- yum). Next up baked goods with almond and coconut flour.

Even though it is hard we've stuck with it and I've already lost over 20 pounds and I'm down a size. My husband has lost around 20 pounds and his blood sugar is normal. He was diagnosed as a diabetic two years ago but has been managing it with natural supplements- cinnamon, turmeric, and chromium. But even with the supplements his blood sugar would bounce around. He was still consuming too much sugar. Keto fixed that.

In addition to Keto I've been trying other things to help with my healing. First up was meditation. I've always had issues with meditation. I just felt like I couldn't sit still, focus, or be quiet long enough. My schedule was just too busy to take a moment to be still.

The Serenity House of Flint started a weekly meditation workshop a few weeks ago. I happened to see it on Facebook and on a whim decided to go and dragged my daughter and best friend with me. It's amazing. I love it.

My daughter went back to school but my bestie and I now go every week.

An hour before meditation The Serenity House also offers a weekly holistic healing hour.  1st Friday is essential oils, 2nd, 4th and 5th Fridays are Reiki, 3rd Fridays are yoga.

The first one we attended was yoga. My first ever yoga class. I made it through the entire class. Could I do all the stretches and poses perfect? No. But I still did them. A year ago, hell 2 months ago I would not have been able to make it through the class without crying or flat out quitting due to the pain.

Keto has reduced the inflammation in my body and made me more mobile. Am I all the sudden perfectly mobile with no pain? No. My joints still aches with the cold and I have random aches and pains to deal with. But the all consuming excruciating pain that made it so I could not even walk through my house is greatly diminished. Many days it hasn't been there at all.

My knees are still shot, injuries from dance and gymnastics as a child and teen, combined with over a decade of carrying around too much extra weight have wreaked havoc on my them. Recovery after yoga took days, almost a week. But I am celebrating the fact that I made it through that class and plan to do more classes.

Last night the healing hour consisted of Acudetox (ear acupuncture) and Reiki. Both a first for me. That was followed by meditation. So I had almost 3 hours of relaxing, healing time with no phone, no electronics, no stress...it was amazing.

I am celebrating my little victories and enjoying all the new things I am trying and learning on my journey to health and wellness.

So far I've tried more new things and been more productive in 2019 then I was in 2016 and 17 put together. 2018 was all about reviving my creativity. But 2019 is about reviving me.

I know that many of my physical issues are manifestations of trauma I have experienced in my life and the poor choices I made in dealing with the traumas. I tried to bury the pain in people, experiences, work, diversions, ...I locked everything up until I couldn't feel much of anything. Then it leaked out. Manifesting in physical pain and illness.

Meditation, yoga, reiki, acupuncture, and other holistic practices are ways to heal all of me. So far I am amazed by the results.

I can't wait to see where this journey takes me next.

P.S. I have to say thanks to my husband for sticking with this keto diet and making sure I stick with it. He is doing 95% of the cooking and grocery shopping while I focus on my book. He's kicking ass at making tasty keto food.

And I have to say thank you to my bestie, Ilona, for being my partner in the wellness journey and encouraging me to stick with it and to not let my anxiety keep me from trying new things.
