Where Bougainvillea comes from…Guest blog and GIveaway with Jeanette Pekala

Where Bougainvillea comes from…

Bougainvillea is the fictional town where Culture Shock, my debut novel, takes place. I knew I wanted a country setting since the main character is moving from the busy city to a small country town, but I didn’t want to use existing landmarks. I wanted the story to flow the way I wanted it to—ah, the beauty of fiction. So I chose a spot on the map that I loved in north Florida. There is essentially nothing between the towns of Micanopy and McIntosh on Highway 441 in north Florida, but the scenery is exquisite. The big granddaddy majestic oaks with the swaying moss, old farm houses and pretty Victorians tucked away in overgrown fields. The hilly and green landscape with amazing wildflowers of every shade. Gorgeous. It was the perfect place for the setting of my book with such a stark contrast to the big city (Manhattan) where Macy, the main character is from.

So what did I do? I created a new little country town named after a popular Florida flower, Bougainvillea. And that’s how the setting for my book came into fruition. The town of Bougainvillea is a mix of trailer parks and old antebellum homes with a few businesses stuck here and there; most of them are in those old antebellum homes along the highway, much like many of the little towns in the area. Combine dirt roads, bonfires, some kooky characters, and high school southern football pride and you’ll get the foundation for Bougainvillea.

Book Description:

CULTURE SHOCK is a witty tale of mystery and romance with a large helping of southern hospitality.

Macy Holmes is a seventeen-year-old socially-isolated introvert since her best friend's death a year ago. When her family decides to move from Manhattan to the quaint country town of Bougainvillea, Florida, Macy finds she's in a completely different world. Macy is no longer the outsider hiding behind designer clothes when she is sought out by three strange students, one of whom she is particularly interested in. The more time she spends with Chad the more things don't add up. When his true identity is finally revealed, Macy is pulled into a supernatural society with its saturation of inhabitants residing in Bougainvillea.

You would think she has enough on her plate, but no, then her dreams become infiltrated by an external magical force, Macy and her band of supernatural misfits must find the culprit behind the magic-induced nightmares. They must dodge zombie assassins, shifty shape-shifters and high school bullies in order to stop this perpetrator before Macy, her friends or her parents pay the ultimate price.

Especially when Macy has the sneaking suspicion that these dreams are reality...
